Record 1 2009-11-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
  • Mineralogy
DEF

A gas cavity or vesicle, in an igneous rock that is filled with such secondary minerals as calcite, quartz, chalcedony, or a zeolite.

CONT

At some stage after lava has solidified, the vesicles may be filled by a variety of secondary minerals, especially calcite and zeolites. The infilled vesicles are referred to as amygdales ...

CONT

... the copper minerals fill intergranular spaces in clastic sedimentary host rocks, and spaces in the matrices of flow-top breccias and in amygdules in amygdaloidal flow tops.

OBS

The term amygdale is preferred in British usage.

OBS

amygdule : term used at Natural Resources Canada-Earth Sciences Sector.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pétrographie
  • Minéralogie
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
  • Vulcanology and Seismology
DEF

An elongate amygdule that occurs in a lava, towards the base of the flow, probably formed by the generation of gases or vapor from the underlying material.

CONT

Occasionally elongated cylindrical cavities (pipe amygdales) occur at right angles to the surfaces of the lava flow. They are formed when lava flows over a patch of wet ground, e.g. a spring, the steam so evolved penetrating the lava, leaving tubes behind.

OBS

The term amygdale is preferred in British usage.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pétrographie
  • Volcanologie et sismologie
CONT
