The Doppler effect on sound waves is experienced in everyday life. When an ambulance passes us, the siren appears to change its note. As it approaches, the pitch is high. As it passes us, the pitch falls. The effect occurs with any type of waves, including light. In the case of sound the effect was described by Christian Andreas Doppler(1803-1853), while for the light it was observed by Armand Fizeau(1819-1896). That's why sometimes the effect is called the Doppler-Fizeau effect.

Effet Doppler. L'effet tient son nom du physicien Christian Johann Doppler, qui établit le principe physique du phénomène sur les ondes sonores en 1842. Lorsque l'émetteur de l'onde se rapproche de l'observateur, la fréquence semble plus grande (l'onde est «tassée»), et lorsqu'il s'en éloigne, la fréquence semble plus faible (l'onde est «dilatée»). C'est pourquoi la sirène d'une ambulance paraît plus aiguë quand elle s'approche d'un observateur et plus grave lorsqu'elle s'éloigne de lui.

Ce décalage est donc fonction de la vitesse relative d'éloignement, ce qui permet aux astrophysiciens de déterminer la position, la vitesse et la composition d'un astre. À l'échelle atomique (modèle microscopique), l'effet Doppler-Fizeau est responsable de l'élargissement thermique des raies spectrales [...]

A type of stress-strain relationship occurring at the collision boundary of the North American and Pacific Plates in the Big Bend segment of the San Andreas Fault.

In very simple terms, this collision boundary is the San Andreas Fault Zone. In fact, the collision boundary is a much broader zone estimated to be a hundred kilometers in width near the project area. As the Pacific and North American Plates collide with each other, blocks of crust in each plate are thrust over or rotated with respect to other blocks.

There are probably dozens of Box Canyons in California; this one is a colourful ravine through the Mecca Hills at the east end of the Coachella Valley in the southeast of the state, 40 miles from Palm Springs. The sides are formed by upturned strata-twisted, buckled and eroded, they stretch for about 8 miles along the canyon, which is part of a metamorphic zone associated with the nearby San Andreas Fault. This runs through the Coachella Valley then southeast past the Salton Sea and affects the geology of a wide strip of land at either side.

Paul Andreas Mahr, the Conductor of the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, is the 1998 winner of the Heinz Unger Award. John Brotman, Ontario Arts Council(OAC) Music Officer presented the $5, 500 prize today at the Orchestras Canada National Conference in Edmonton. The Heinz Unger Award is given every two years to encourage and highlight the accomplishments of a young or mid-career Canadian conductor. Nominations are put forward by Orchestras Canada and a panel of experts from the music community selects the winner.
