Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 DEF
The phenomenon evidenced by the change in the observed frequency of a sound or radio wave caused by a time rate of change in the effective length of the path of travel between the source and the point of observation. [Definition standardized by NATO.] 4, record 1, English, - Doppler%20effect

The Doppler effect on sound waves is experienced in everyday life. When an ambulance passes us, the siren appears to change its note. As it approaches, the pitch is high. As it passes us, the pitch falls. The effect occurs with any type of waves, including light. In the case of sound the effect was described by Christian Andreas Doppler(1803-1853), while for the light it was observed by Armand Fizeau(1819-1896). That's why sometimes the effect is called the Doppler-Fizeau effect. 5, record 1, English, - Doppler%20effect

Doppler effect. ... the theory was [also] found to hold true for radio waves ... The Doppler effect is the only means now known for detecting the motion of certain very distant objects. It is also invaluable in the tracking of missiles. 6, record 1, English, - Doppler%20effect
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 3 CONT
... Armand Fizeau ... proved that the Doppler effect [in terms of electromagnetic phenomenon] also occurred in space. He proved that when a celestial object was moving away from Earth the lines of the spectrum [lower observed frequency] seen through a spectroscope would move towards the red end, and when the object was moving towards the Earth the lines of the spectrum [higher observed frequency] would move towards the blue end. 7, record 1, English, - Doppler%20effect

[The] "Doppler-Fizeau effect" or more simply "The Doppler effect" is usually shown and/or demonstrated by the example of the very definite change in the sound of a train and/or its whistle as the train passes a stationary observer. 8, record 1, English, - Doppler%20effect

3, record 1, French, - effet%20Doppler
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 DEF

5, record 1, French, - effet%20Doppler
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
L'effet Doppler-Fizeau.
