Simplistically, [animal] feeds consist of two major fractions—water and dry matter. While water is physiologically critical, the nutrients(energy, protein, minerals, and vitamins) are found in the dry matter fraction, so it is important to know what percentage of the feed is associated with dry matter. The world’s first laboratory-grown beef burger was flipped out of a petri dish and into a frying pan on Monday, with food tasters declaring it tasted "close to meat." Grown in vitro from cattle stem cells at a cost of 250,000 euros ($332,000), the burger was cooked and eaten in front of television cameras to gain the greatest media coverage for the culmination of a five-year science experiment. Resembling a standard circular-shaped red meat patty, it was created by knitting together 20,000 strands of laboratory-grown protein, combined with other ingredients normally used in burgers, such as salt, breadcrumbs and egg powder. Red beet juice and saffron were added to give it color. 1, record 9, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 9, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The first laboratory-produced meat patty (cultured beef burger) presented in London on August 5, 2013, by Dr. Mark Post, a physiologist from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, was dubbed the "Frankenburger." The professor and his colleagues produced the meat-like substance by cultivating muscle tissue from cow stem cells in fetal serum and other growth-promoting materials (vitamines, amino acids, growth hormones, sugar, etc.). The laboratory-grown meat at this stage of development is prohibitively expensive, but might one day become a substitute for "real" meat. The product needs to be enhanced to improve its texture, taste and appearance. Some scientists predict that cultured meat might be commercially available within a decade. Others say that it will be possible to grow it in one’s own kitchen within 20 years. 13, record 9, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 9, Textual support number: 2 OBS
The development of meat substitutes is praised on ethical grounds by animal rights or welfare activists since these products have the potential to greatly reduce the inhumane raising and slaughtering of animals raised for meat. Environmentalists, economists and scientists support these products since they might one day be a cost-effective means of meeting world demands for meat, while greatly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste, as well as the use of water, farmland and animal feed that make intensive animal farming unsustainable. On the other hand, natural food advocates have serious doubts concerning ingredients needed to grow and enhance these products, and the long term safety of their consumption; and meat industry proponents argue that the technology still requires stem cell donors(the cells from a single donor cannot replicate indefinitely) and that the product remains a far cry from "real" meat. Only time will tell if these products will, in a perhaps not so distant future, entirely replace, or only supplement, the meat industry. 13, record 9, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 9, Textual support number: 3 OBS
cultured beef hamburger: A "hamburger" is a minced beef patty. Terms such as "cultured beef hamburger" could therefore be considered pleonastic. The term "burger" is the shortened form of "hamburger." While burgers are traditionally made of beef, non-beef burgers have become popular, and modifiers such as "veggie," "tuna," "chicken," "nut," and "soya" are used to describe them. Given this relatively new reality, the use of seemingly pleonastic terms such as "cultured beef burger" may be justified. 13, record 9, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 9, Textual support number: 4 OBS
The combination of terms such as "hamburger," "cultured," "laboratory," "in vitro" and their short forms to create neologisms designating this product yields an impressive number of synonyms. This will remain the case as long as terminology used to describe this relatively new concept is not well established. 13, record 9, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 9, Textual support number: 5 OBS
synthetic hamburger; artificial hamburger: The terms "synthetic meat" and "artificial meat" designate products that imitate meat but that are not necessarily laboratory-grown from animal cells. Hence, the use of qualifiers such as "synthetic" and "artificial" might lead to confuse a cultured hamburger with, for example, a soy-based burger. 13, record 9, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 9, Textual support number: 6 OBS
Terms such as "Frankenburger" that do not include the modifier "beef" might very well be used some day to designate similar laboratory-grown products made from animal cells other than beef. 13, record 9, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger

One of the important aspects determining nutrient requirements is feed intake. If an animal is consuming more total feed per day than normal, the level of nutrients, per unit weight, can be reduced. If the animal is consuming less feed than would normally be the case, then to satisfy the requirements, the nutrient density should be increased. Since the dietary intake is related in many cases to energy content, the nutrient content of the diet will vary depending on energy level. 4, record 19, English, - feed%20intake

Conenose, or kissing bugs(Triatoma sp.)... feed exclusively on the blood of vertebrate animals. Although generally rare, they are most common around animal nests or pet resting areas, emerging at night to search for blood meal. Their bites are gentle and painless, and usually occur while the victim is asleep. They are generally unable to bite through clothing. On humans, blood meals are sometimes taken from the tender areas of the face(hence the name "kissing bug"). 2, record 36, English, - conenose%20bug

Animal Feeding Operations(AFOs) are agricultural operations where animals are kept and raised in confined situations. AFOs congregate animals, feed, manure and urine, dead animals, and production operations on a small land area. Feed is brought to the animals rather than the animals grazing or otherwise seeking feed in pastures, fields, or on rangeland.... Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations(CAFOs) are AFOs that meet certain EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] criteria. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The Government of Canada introduced the Cull Animal Program in November 2003 to help producers face the challenges created by the closure of borders to live animals. On February 16, 2004, the Government announced that it was adjusting the program by removing the original requirement that animals be slaughtered before producers received payment. This change allows producers to access funds even sooner, provides equal access to the program across Canada, and helps with feed costs until producers can move their animals to slaughter. 1, record 79, English, - Cull%20Animal%20Program

1, record 79, French, - Programme%20relatif%20aux%20animaux%20de%20r%C3%A9forme

Hydrolyzed feather meal. Description. The process involves preparation of poultry feed as animal... protein supplement from poultry feathers, which form the solid wastes in the poultry dressing units and are thrown out creating disposal problems. Although the feathers contain about 80% protein, they are not easily digestable in raw stage due to the presence of disulfide linkage. The process involves rehydration of the feathers followed by thermal hydrolysis and subsequent drying as well as powdering. The uniqueness of the process lies in hydrolysing this rich proteinous source, which is otherwise wasted adding to pollution problem to prepare a protein supplement for poultry feed, thereby creating wealth out of waste. 1, record 83, English, - hydrolyzed%20feather%20meal

On December 5, 2000, the EU [European Union] Farm Council met to discuss the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy(BSE) situation in the EU and develop regulations relating to feeding rendered products to livestock.... It is believed that BSE is transmitted through the feeding of rendered products from infected animals. As a result, the EU farm council has proposed a 6 month ban on feeding rendered products to livestock beginning in January 2001. This proposal bans the use of all animal protein meals from feeds including feather meal and blood meal. Fish meal is also banned for use in cattle feed but is allowed in feed destined for fish, poultry, and hogs. 2, record 84, English, - rendered%20product

One of the early pioneers in the scientific feeding of animals was Professor W. R. Graham, of the Ontario Agricultural College at Guelph. In the early 1900s he established a poultry department, staffed with scientists, and encouraged research involving the use of chicks as experimental animal. His early contribution was to provide a series of "open formulas" of feed ingredients that produced good results in terms of growth and production. 1, record 96, English, - open%20formula

1, record 96, French, - formule%20libre
