The Brandon Humane Society has been in operation since 1946 when it was founded by Eleanor Kidd. She originally housed the shelter in her garage on 13th Street, then in an abandoned stable near Empress Bay, and later in an old barn near the riverbank where Eleanor Kidd Gardens are now located. In 1997, the shelter moved to its new premises at 2200 17th Street East. These days, our residents-both cats and dogs-live in a comfortable building with heat and air conditioning, two large exercise yards, an enclosed cat patio, and enough kennels for 20 cats and 13 dogs. When our kennels are full, our dedicated volunteers foster animals in their own homes. Since this is a no-kill shelter, the atmosphere is very positive... our animals are loved and well cared for as they wait to be adopted. We invite you to come visit us and see for yourself! Our Mandate. The Brandon Humane Society's constitution states that the Society :-has the primary purpose of providing aid and assistance to companion animals,-will accept unwanted companion animals into the shelter when space is available,-will make every effort to find homes for animals in our care,-and will educate the public on companion animal needs, especially the importance of sterilization. 3, record 6, English, - Brandon%20Humane%20Society

Density currents are of considerable practical importance. For example, the deposition of sediment from turbidity currents—i. e., density currents in which the density difference is caused by suspended sediment—in lakes may result in a rapid decrease of reservoir capacity. Equally significant, the industrial discharge of large amounts of heated water may generate density currents that have adverse effects on neighbouring human or animal communities. Because of such considerations, many experimental studies on the properties of density currents have been undertaken. 4, record 12, English, - density%20current

[Description of a North American Aboriginal costume displayed at the British Museum :] War shirt, leggings, head-dress and moccasins. Blackfoot, around AD 1840-1860. From Alberta or Montana, North America. Various items of the Blackfoot costume. The war shirt is decorated with painted designs including Thunderbirds, bison heads, horses, and tadpoles, probably representing a combination of religious images relating to specific exploits of the owner... The tadpoles, also depicted down the leggings, may represent war wounds. Large amounts of ermine or weasel fur have been used on the leggings, this animal being considered the most dangerous, for its size, by the Blackfoot. 2, record 13, English, - war%20shirt

Squeeze chutes can be purchased with or without a palpation cage.... The palpation cage provides easy access to the rear of animals for such practices as castration, pregnancy checking and artificial insemination. The palpation cage should be large enough to provide easy access to the animal and have a door that will swing away from the chute and latch across the alley. This will provide protection from the next animal in line while working with the animal in the chute. Consider whether the palpation cage should have doors on both sides to provide easier access. 2, record 14, English, - palpation%20cage

In vitro freezing of tissue. Early attempts at studying the effects of speed and final temperature of freezing of tissue slices on cellular damage had difficulty in separating these parameters. Rubinsky and co-workers developed a method of controlled freezing of tissue slices on a microscope slide moving along a temperature gradient between two constant temperature bases. They were able to freeze animal and human liver tissue with a constant cooling rate. Their experiments revealed that high cooling rates will result in intracellular ice formation and probably immediate cell death, representing the clinical situation very close to the cryoprobe. Lower cooling rates resulting in cellular dehydration and extracellular ice formation with large ice crystals propagating along the sinusoids, expanding them by a factor of two in diameter. 1, record 15, English, - final%20temperature%20of%20freezing

Game animals.... A term applied to wild animals that are deemed suitable for human consumption. Some species are now domesticated and because their diets and activity levels are changed, their meat has a different flavor than that of field animals. Game animals are categorized as large game and small game. The most common large game meat is venison, which, though commonly thought of as deer, is a term that broadly includes the meat from elk, moose, reindeer, caribou and antelope. Other popular large game animals include buffalo, wild boar and, to a lesser degree, bear... The most common small game animal is rabbit. Squirrel is also quite popular, followed distantly by beaver, muskrat, opossum, raccoon, armadillo and even porcupine. 1, record 19, English, - game%20animal

There is some interest in adenoviruses as gene cloning vectors for expressing large amounts of recombinant proteins in animal cells. Like many viruses, adenoviruses have the ability to "turn on" their genes at a very high level.
