The Brandon Humane Society has been in operation since 1946 when it was founded by Eleanor Kidd. She originally housed the shelter in her garage on 13th Street, then in an abandoned stable near Empress Bay, and later in an old barn near the riverbank where Eleanor Kidd Gardens are now located. In 1997, the shelter moved to its new premises at 2200 17th Street East. These days, our residents-both cats and dogs-live in a comfortable building with heat and air conditioning, two large exercise yards, an enclosed cat patio, and enough kennels for 20 cats and 13 dogs. When our kennels are full, our dedicated volunteers foster animals in their own homes. Since this is a no-kill shelter, the atmosphere is very positive... our animals are loved and well cared for as they wait to be adopted. We invite you to come visit us and see for yourself! Our Mandate. The Brandon Humane Society's constitution states that the Society :-has the primary purpose of providing aid and assistance to companion animals,-will accept unwanted companion animals into the shelter when space is available,-will make every effort to find homes for animals in our care,-and will educate the public on companion animal needs, especially the importance of sterilization.

DEF

The phenomenon of gravity flow of a liquid relative to another liquid, or of relative flow within a liquid medium due to difference in density. [Definition standardized by ISO.]

CONT

A density current flows because of the pull of gravity and the density difference, and it stops moving when the two fluids mix, or when the current uses up its energy.

CONT

Density currents are of considerable practical importance. For example, the deposition of sediment from turbidity currents—i. e., density currents in which the density difference is caused by suspended sediment—in lakes may result in a rapid decrease of reservoir capacity. Equally significant, the industrial discharge of large amounts of heated water may generate density currents that have adverse effects on neighbouring human or animal communities. Because of such considerations, many experimental studies on the properties of density currents have been undertaken.

Squeeze chutes can be purchased with or without a palpation cage.... The palpation cage provides easy access to the rear of animals for such practices as castration, pregnancy checking and artificial insemination. The palpation cage should be large enough to provide easy access to the animal and have a door that will swing away from the chute and latch across the alley. This will provide protection from the next animal in line while working with the animal in the chute. Consider whether the palpation cage should have doors on both sides to provide easier access.

CONT

In vitro freezing of tissue. Early attempts at studying the effects of speed and final temperature of freezing of tissue slices on cellular damage had difficulty in separating these parameters. Rubinsky and co-workers developed a method of controlled freezing of tissue slices on a microscope slide moving along a temperature gradient between two constant temperature bases. They were able to freeze animal and human liver tissue with a constant cooling rate. Their experiments revealed that high cooling rates will result in intracellular ice formation and probably immediate cell death, representing the clinical situation very close to the cryoprobe. Lower cooling rates resulting in cellular dehydration and extracellular ice formation with large ice crystals propagating along the sinusoids, expanding them by a factor of two in diameter.

CONT

Injectable microreactors. A new type of encapsulation technology with the potential for transplantation of islets across a wide species barrier without immunosuppression has been developed. These selectively permeable "microreactors"(600-1200 um) are fabricated from biodegradable polymers that are slowly absorbed and excreted by the body. The microreactors can simply be injected under the skin, or placed intraperitoneally or in other extravascular sites using a needle or syringe.

OBS

These microreactors have been tested in small and large animal models. In one of the experiments designed to test xenograft survival, bovine and porcine islets were immobilizided in the microreactors and implanted in the intraperitoneal cavity of diabetic rats without immunosuppression...

A group of water-soluble proteins found in association with the DNA of plant and animal chromosomes. They contain a large proportion of the basic(positively charged) amino acids lysine, arginine, and histidine. They are believed to be involved in the condensation and coiling of chromosomes during cell division and have also been implicated in nonspecific suppression of gene activity.

There are several different systems used to process organic wastes aerobically, but the three systems that have received the most attention for animal manure are the indoor oxidation ditch, the mechanical aerated lagoon and the naturally aerated lagoon. Naturally aerated lagoons, however, will have limited use due to their large surface area and water requirements.

The great strength and toughness of rawhide rendered it useful to the Indian... The skins of various large land and aquatic animals were made into rawhide, varying, according to the animal, in thinness, color, strength. In preparing rawhide the skin was fleshed, dehaired, and stretched till it dried, when it was ready for use.
