A knowledge of the fate of a drug, its disposition(absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, known by the acronym ADME) and pharmacokinetics... plays a central role throughout pharmaceutical research and development. These studies aid in the discovery and selection of new chemical entities, support safety assessment, and are critical in defining conditions for safe and effective use in patients. ADME studies provide [a] basis for critical judgments from situations where the behavior of the drug is understood to those where it is unknown : this is most important in bridging from animal studies to the human situation. 3, record 1, English, - absorption%2C%20distribution%2C%20metabolism%20and%20excretion%20study

2, record 3, French, - biotechnologie%20animale

Alternative methods. In order to reduce the need of laboratory animals the CFN has, in co-operation with the Swedish pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca and Pharmacia, supported research on alternatives to animal models ever since 1980. It has supported projects in areas such as toxicology, pharmacology and cell biology. Basically, two different kinds of projects have been considered for financial support, i. e. projects which may be expected to result in a change from a method involving animals to an alternative method in a short time and projects relating to fundamental research that is likely to contribute to the development of new non-animal methods in the longer term. 2, record 6, English, - alternative%20method
