The Brandon Humane Society has been in operation since 1946 when it was founded by Eleanor Kidd. She originally housed the shelter in her garage on 13th Street, then in an abandoned stable near Empress Bay, and later in an old barn near the riverbank where Eleanor Kidd Gardens are now located. In 1997, the shelter moved to its new premises at 2200 17th Street East. These days, our residents-both cats and dogs-live in a comfortable building with heat and air conditioning, two large exercise yards, an enclosed cat patio, and enough kennels for 20 cats and 13 dogs. When our kennels are full, our dedicated volunteers foster animals in their own homes. Since this is a no-kill shelter, the atmosphere is very positive... our animals are loved and well cared for as they wait to be adopted. We invite you to come visit us and see for yourself! Our Mandate. The Brandon Humane Society's constitution states that the Society :-has the primary purpose of providing aid and assistance to companion animals,-will accept unwanted companion animals into the shelter when space is available,-will make every effort to find homes for animals in our care,-and will educate the public on companion animal needs, especially the importance of sterilization. 3, record 4, English, - Brandon%20Humane%20Society

World Animal Day is celebrated each year on 4 October. On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated, and special events are planned on locations all over the globe. 4 October was originally chosen for World Animal Day because it is the feast day of Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment. Numerous churches throughout the world observe the Sunday closest to the 4th of October with a blessing for the animals. However, World Animal Day has now gone beyond being the celebration of a Christian saint and is today observed by animal-lovers of all beliefs, nationalities and backgrounds. Animal rescue shelters hold fundraising events and open days, wildlife groups organize information displays, schools undertake animal-related project work and individuals and groups of friends or co-workers donate to animal charities or pledge to sponsor a shelter animal. 1, record 6, English, - World%20Animal%20Day
