4, record 1, French, - r%C3%A9ensauvagement

Traditional knowledge refers to the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous and local communities around the world. Developed from experience gained over the centuries and adapted to the local culture and environment, traditional knowledge is transmitted orally from generation to generation. It tends to be collectively owned and takes the form of stories, songs, folklore, proverbs, cultural values, beliefs, rituals, community laws, local language, and agricultural practices, including the development of plant species and animal breeds. Traditional knowledge is mainly of a practical nature, particularly in such fields as agriculture, fisheries, health, horticulture, and forestry. 3, record 2, English, - traditional%20knowledge

Both evolutionists and economists argue that individuals do things for the larger group only if it is also for the good of the individual. Animals rarely do selfless things for their species. And people rarely do selfless things for the good of society. But even desiccated economists had noticed the "voter paradox. "People vote in elections despite the fact that no individual can expect to influence the outcome. People give to charity. Executives work long hours on behalf of their firms. Travellers tip waiters they will never see again. Soldiers willingly risk their lives for their country. Trust, cooperation and altruism are all part of human life. They are also part of animal life. The question is how do you reconcile altruism with the invisible hand and survival of the fittest? 1, record 39, English, - voter%20paradox

Although the Canadian Food Inspection Agency(CFIA) is the lead agency for the National Aquatic Animal Health Program(NAAHP), the Department of Fisheries and Oceans(DFO) is responsible for providing diagnostic and research support. This virtual Centre of Expertise(COE) will provide consistent and scientifically robust delivery of aquatic animal health diagnostics and research in support of NAAHP, research diseases of highest regulatory significance through the nationally coordinated Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory System that includes the Gulf Fisheries Centre, Moncton, NB; the Pacific Biological Station, Nanaimo, BC; and the Freshwater Institute, Winnipeg, MB. The Centre has three primary priorities : 1) diagnostic methods, 2) technology development, and 3) knowledge generation. This COE will develop and validate quality assured diagnostic methods for priority diseases, develop efficient and effective technology platforms in support of analytical procedures and diagnostic tests, and develop a sound scientific knowledge base in support of regulatory programs and risk-based management. Research priorities established in conjunction with CFIA include : viral strain differentiation and correlation to pathogenic significance, development and validations of diagnostic tools, disease transmission via product, carrier species, non-lethal sampling, processing effluent, decontamination procedures, and emerging disease investigation. As aquatic animal health issues expand, the Centre will provide the research and diagnostics required to protect Canada's seafood trade. 1, record 50, English, - Centre%20of%20Expertise%20for%20Aquatic%20Animal%20Health%20and%20Research%20Diagnostics

1, record 50, French, - Centre%20d%27expertise%20sur%20la%20sant%C3%A9%20des%20animaux%20aquatiques%2C%20recherche%20et%20diagnostic

Controlled goods include firearms and items made from endangered plant and animal species. 2, record 60, English, - controlled%20goods

Game animals.... A term applied to wild animals that are deemed suitable for human consumption. Some species are now domesticated and because their diets and activity levels are changed, their meat has a different flavor than that of field animals. Game animals are categorized as large game and small game. The most common large game meat is venison, which, though commonly thought of as deer, is a term that broadly includes the meat from elk, moose, reindeer, caribou and antelope. Other popular large game animals include buffalo, wild boar and, to a lesser degree, bear... The most common small game animal is rabbit. Squirrel is also quite popular, followed distantly by beaver, muskrat, opossum, raccoon, armadillo and even porcupine. 1, record 62, English, - game%20animal

Not just simple responses to an external stimulus play a role in instinctive behavior; instinctive activity involves sequences of behavior that run a predictable course. These behaviors may last seconds, minutes, hours or even days. Exemplifying this, we can refer to a particular species of digger wasp, which finds and captures only honeybees. With no previous experience, a female wasp will unearth an intricate burrow, find a bee, paralyze it with a careful and precise sting to the neck, pilot back to her discreet home, and, when the larder has been supplied with the correct number of bees, lay an egg on one of them and seal the chamber.... Overall, one of the main distinctive features of instinctive activity is the ability to react to an external stimulus the correct way the first chance(and every time thereafter) the animal receives. This feature distinguishes this particular behavior from what ethnologists call learned behavior, which scientists have discovered are actions that take place from conditioning an animal to learn the right way. 1, record 72, English, - instinctive%20behaviour

One of the reasons ecologists are so alarmed by the gradual loss of animal species from our ravaged earth is the diversity index. This index is based on the ecological rule that any adverse environment causes a concomitant decrease in the number of species able to survive in that environment.
