Although a specific term in relationship to the French equivalent "babiche", the term "thong" is actually a generic term within the English language that denotes any strip of leather or hide, whether used for the hair or used in the making of snowshoes. When referring to the finished product or to all the strips used in the making of a snowshoe, the term "webbing" (short for "webbing of thongs") may be used. Other related terms: strap (normally thicker and sturdier than thong). In some cases the term "babiche" is borrowed from the French and Aboriginal vocabularies not only to retain the historic and cultural flavor of the original text, but because there is no exact equivalent in cases where "babiche" refers to a strip that is not of animal hide, but rather of animal sinew or tendon. Moreover, one would not use the term "thin straps" (in the plural) when referring to snowshoes, because a "strap" is usually not used meshed with other straps, rather it is used to prevent something from moving, as in a strap and buckle of a sandal. 2, record 17, English, - sinew

Du Pont and Duke University collaborators have developed the Biolistic gene gun, a particle delivery system which employs microcarriers coated with genetic material to insert DNA into animal cells. The microcarriers are accelerated on macrocarriers in a stream of helium to fire the microcarriers into external tissue or, using surgery, into the livers of mice. The system has been used to insert genes encoding the enzyme, firefly luciferase, into mice and the next stage is likely to be insertion of a therapeutically useful gene into animal liver cells which would show the procedure to be of potential use in gene therapy. 1, record 18, English, - gene%20gun

In vitro freezing of tissue. Early attempts at studying the effects of speed and final temperature of freezing of tissue slices on cellular damage had difficulty in separating these parameters. Rubinsky and co-workers developed a method of controlled freezing of tissue slices on a microscope slide moving along a temperature gradient between two constant temperature bases. They were able to freeze animal and human liver tissue with a constant cooling rate. Their experiments revealed that high cooling rates will result in intracellular ice formation and probably immediate cell death, representing the clinical situation very close to the cryoprobe. Lower cooling rates resulting in cellular dehydration and extracellular ice formation with large ice crystals propagating along the sinusoids, expanding them by a factor of two in diameter. 1, record 19, English, - final%20temperature%20of%20freezing

Containers can be handled automatically by the Biolab Handling Mechanism. Independent analysis instruments are available for supporting experiment sample test analyses. A capability for the visualisation of images is at hand. The atmospheric environment of the Experiment Container may be adjusted during centrifuge operations. Automatic temperature-controlled and ambient temperature stowage units are available for storing Experiment Container samples. A Biolab glovebox provides a clean, controlled and enclosed environment for manual operations on Experiment Container samples. A secondary novel technology to which the Company has exclusive rights is that of antibody-targeted liposomes. This technology involves the incorporation of an antimyosin antibody into liposome membranes that serves to target the immunoliposome to cytoskeletal protein exposed by cellular membrane lesions. Upon anchoring the liposome to the cell via the antibody the liposome presumably fuses with the cell membrane and repairs the lesion. In vitro and animal model studies have shown that this methodology has been able to preserve cell and tissue viability under anoxic/ischemic conditions. This technology may be able to limit the extent of heart muscle damage during heart attacks and myocarditis. 1, record 36, English, - immunoliposome

Source WEBIN gives to the term "oleo oil" a slightly different definition, as follows: "a yellow oil of buttery consistency expressed usually from edible tallow and used in making margarine and soap and in lubrication". Since it seems to possess a more general sense than "tallow oil", a translation solution could be to use the generic French equivalent "huile grasse". 5, record 37, English, - tallow%20oil

A variety of approaches is being used to develop a vaccine. The most advanced are live oral vaccines developed by scientists at the US National Institutes of Health and Wistar Institute, in collaboration with US vaccine manufacturers. These are "re-assortant" vaccines-so-called because they are based on an animal strain of rotavirus(from a monkey or cow) that has been modified by the substitution of gene segments from human strains of the virus. These genes encode protective antigens from the outer shell of the virus. The vaccines include genes from the four serotypes of rotavirus most commonly found-all of which occur in children. They are produced in tissue culture. 1, record 39, English, - reassortant%20vaccine
