CONT

In another application of gene therapy we have used an adenoviral vector that carries the gene for herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase(HSV-tk). Cells expressing HSV-tk will convert the anti-viral drug ganciclovir(GCV) to a form that is toxic to rapidly dividing cells. Using this adenoviral vector we have repeatedly shown robust tumoricidal effects in a variety of animal models of CNS tumor and will soon take this treatment to phase I clinical trials. We are extending this work to the manipulation of the CNSs immune response to tumors using adenoviral vectors that carry several cytokine genes.

Several plants, mostly angiosperms, rely on some animal vector to transport the pollen from the anther of one flower to the stigma of another... Animal vectors can be insects, like bees, birds, such as hummingbirds and certain bats... zoophilous blossoms are sensitive to particular stimuli from specific animal vectors.

CONT

In recent years, infected military personnel have imported various infectious diseases that could have or did present a threat to civilian populations. If an imported infectious agent is contagious or is acquired by a suitable domestic insect or animal vector, it could result in the introduction and spread of a new disease to North America with general adverse health and economic consequences.

OBS

[A vector is] a carrier, or vehicle, that transfers a substance from one host to another.

DEF

An apparatus consisting of a slowly revolving disk, usually regulated by clockwork, by means of which the action of external agents, as light and gravity, on growing plants may be regulated or eliminated.

CONT

The Clinostat has been used by biologists for over a hundred years to study how organisms might adapt to the microgravity environment and what effects the force of gravity has on plant and animal development and behavior. The clinostat is a simple device which places a plant, a small organism, or cell growing in culture on a rotating platform. The rotation causes the biosystem under test to be subjected to the gravity vector from "all" directions. From the system's point of view, the rotation cancels the gravity vector by continuous averaging thus approximating the highly reduced vector found in the actual space environment.
