A test to distinguish between gastrocnemius and soleus muscle tightness which result in the limitation of dorsal and plantar flexion of the foot when the knee is extended. With the patient sitting on the edge of the examining table, the knee joint is flexed. If ankle dorsiflexion is possible when the knee is flexed, the gastrocnemius muscle is the cause of the limitation, since flexion of the knee slackens the gastrocnemius(a two-joint muscle) by bringing its origin closer to its insertion. Since the soleus is a one-joint muscle, it is not affected by flexion of the knee; if the soleus is responsible for the limited motion, the limitation will be the same whether or not the knee is flexed. 2, record 26, English, - ankle%20dorsiflexion%20test

Le calage. [...] 2, record 38, French, - calage

When performing the straight leg raise test the patient is positioned supine in the absence of pillows. The clinician lifts the patient's symptomatic leg by the posterior ankle while keeping the knee in a fully extended position. The clinician continues to lift the patient's leg by flexing at the hip until pain is illicited or end range is reached. Neurologic pain which is reproduced in the leg and low back between 30-70 degrees of hip flexion is a positive result of lumbar disc herniation at the L4-S1 nerve roots. In order to make this test more specific, the ankle can be dorsiflexed and the cervical spine flexed. This increases the stretching of the nerve root and dura. 2, record 50, English, - straight%2Dleg%20raise%20test

The driving phase begins when the lead foot lands on the outside of the forefoot just in front of the athlete's center of gravity(i. e., the athlete's hips). The foot is driven to the ground by the hip extensor muscles. It is important for the quadriceps to fire as the foot makes contact with the ground to keep the knee from flexing excessively, which would dissipate elastic energy. The ankle should be dorsiflexed, with the foot's big toe pulled up, the combination of which will allow for the storage of elastic energy to be maximized to help with propulsion later... 1, record 64, English, - driving%20phase

Custom ski leg with knee joints-a ski leg with two knee joints was designed for an above-knee skier. One knee joint was for walking, and the other for skiing. When the leg is used for skiing, the upper knee joint is locked and the lower knee joint is used-controlled by a compression spring-as it keeps the leg in the flexed position required for skiing. With the amputee's weight on the coil spring, the ski knee can flex as the amputee goes down the hill but will not collapse and buckle. An adjustable ankle to permit the foot to flex to keep the ski parallel to the hill when going down the slopes was also incorporated. 4, record 72, English, - ski%20leg

The prone leg extension(PLE) test is used by therapists who manually palpate the posterior muscles and observe trunk kinematics in an attempt to identify deviations from a supposed optimal. A dysfunctional firing pattern is assumed to exist when postural muscles(hamstrings and erector spinae) initiate the movement and a delay in gluteus maximus firing is evident. As well, inconsistent or altered firing patterns are assumed to be indicative of dysfunction. While dysfunctions in the trunk are hypothesized to alter the optimal firing pattern, distal dysfunction(ankle sprain) is also theorized to influence the proximal order of optimal firing patterns. An ankle sprain or lower leg injury is theorized to result in "imbalances" in the firing pattern of proximal muscles due to the dysfunction of distal segments. 4, record 76, English, - firing%20pattern
