Polar amplification refers to the potential for greater warming in polar regions compared to the rest of the globe due in part to strong positive feedbacks between ice cover and albedo decreases and air temperature increases in these regions causing additional warming. In the Arctic, amplification is already observed, while for the Antarctic, amplification does not seem to be in effect yet due to the presence of dampening processes. 2, record 4, English, - polar%20amplification

The Southern Ocean, also known as the Great Southern Ocean, the Antarctic Ocean and the South Polar Ocean, comprises the southernmost waters of the World Ocean south of 60° S latitude. The International Hydrographic Organization has designated the Southern Ocean as an oceanic division encircling Antarctica. Geographers disagree on the Southern Ocean's northern boundary or even its existence, sometimes considering the waters part of the South Pacific, South Atlantic, and Indian Oceans instead. Some scientists consider the Antarctic Convergence, an ocean zone which fluctuates seasonally, as separating the Southern Ocean from other oceans, rather than 60° S. This ocean zone forms from the convergence of two circumpolar currents, one easterly flowing and one westerly flowing. The International Hydrographic Organization(IHO) regards the Southern Ocean as the fourth-largest of the five principal oceanic divisions and the latest-defined one. 3, record 25, English, - Antarctic%20Ocean

Fur seals are any of nine species of pinnipeds in the Otariidae family. One species, the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) inhabits the North Pacific, while seven species in the Arctocephalus genus are found primarily in the Southern hemisphere. They are much more closely related to sea lions than true seals, and share with them external ears (pinnae), relatively long and muscular foreflippers, and the ability to walk on all fours. They are marked by their dense underfur, which made them a long-time object of commercial hunting. 3, record 37, English, - fur%20seal

Studies of the Antarctic ozone hole have shown that polar stratospheric clouds(PSCs) play an important role in the depletion of ozone. The PSCs contribute to ozone depletion by cycling chlorine from inactive "reservoir" species such as ClONO2 and HCl into reactive chlorine atoms. Although it is known that one type of PSC particle(Type Ia) contains nitric acid and water in a crystalline form, the composition and formation mechanism of these particles is not yet known. We measured the crystallization rates of nitric acid trihydrate(NAT) and nitric acid dihydrate(NAD) to determine the amount of time which would be required for 3 : 1 and 2 : 1 water : nitric acid solutions to freeze to NAT and NAD, respectively, under stratospheric conditions. 3, record 40, English, - nitric%20acid%20trihydrate

The RADARSAT Antarctic Mapping Mission(AMM) has important significance for the scientific community. Almost 70% of the Earth's fresh water is contained in the Antarctic region, and changes in this enormous reservoir directly influence world sea levels and climate. The new digital radar map will provide an unprecedented detailed portrayal of the surface form and features of the ice sheet. This RADARSAT based map will help scientists to better understand the dynamic behaviour of the ice sheet and provide them with a greater insight into the effects of human activity on the Southern Continent. 2, record 51, English, - Antarctic%20Mapping%20Mission

The switch from one look direction to the other is specified to take less than 10 minutes, that is, about one tenth of the time required to complete one full orbit. Although the look direction switching is an operational feature, the right-looking configuration is regarded as the default mode of operation. 3, record 62, French, - mode%20d%27imagerie

Largely in response to worries about the low abundance of blue whales in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly in view of their protection since the mid-1960s, a research programme for large baleen whales was developed by the Scientific Committee. The International Whaling Commission has subsequently approved the objectives and sequence of work suggested and has now established a major new Southern Ocean Whale and Ecosystem Research(SOWER) programme. This incorporates the continuation of a series of 18 annual whale sighting cruises circum navigating the Antarctic continent to assess the minke and other whale stocks. The programme also includes the collection of biopsy samples of skin from living whales and acoustic recording of blue whale sounds to determine stock and species identity and to improve abundance estimation techniques for rare populations. 1, record 79, English, - Southern%20Ocean%20Whale%20and%20Ecosystem%20Research

An account is given of the Antarctic First Regional Observing Study of the Troposphere(FROST) project, which has been organized by the Physics and Chemistry of the Atmospheric Group of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research. The goals of FROST are to study the meteorology of the Antarctic, to determine the strengths and weaknesses of operational analyses and forecasts over the continent and in the sourrounding ocean areas, and to assess the value of new forms of satellite data that are becoming available. FROST is based around three one-month Special Observing Periods(SOPs)--July 1994, 16 October-15 November 1994, and January 1995 for which comprehensive datasets have been established of model and situ and satellite observations. 2, record 83, English, - Antarctic%20First%20Regional%20Observing%20Study%20of%20the%20Troposphere

The Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources came into force in 1982, as part of the Antarctic Treaty System. It was established mainly in response to concerns that an increase in krill catches in the Southern Ocean could have a serious effect on populations of krill and other marine life; particularly on birds, seals and fish which mainly depend on krill for food. The aim of the Convention is to conserve marine life. This does not exclude harvesting as long as such harvesting is carried out in a rational manner. 2, record 90, English, - Convention%20on%20the%20Conservation%20of%20Antarctic%20Marine%20Living%20Resources

1, record 90, French, - Convention%20sur%20la%20conservation%20de%20la%20faune%20et%20de%20la%20flore%20marines%20de%20l%27Antarctique

The horizontal dimensions of air masses are normally hundreds or even thousands of kilometres. Air masses are classified into groups designated as "polar"(P) or "tropical"(T), maritime(m) or continental(c), defining the basic temperature and humidity characteristics, respectively; more generally, a twofold classification in terms of both elements, e. g. mT or cP, is used. Further divisions are sometimes made into Arctic or Antarctic(A) air and into classes of more local significance, e. g. Mediterranean air. 2, record 97, English, - air%20mass

1, record 99, French, - donn%C3%A9e%20d%27interf%C3%A9rom%C3%A9trie
