Elle a été définie par Hammett, à partir de l'équation empirique [rho-sigma] de forme générale : log [kX/kH] = [[rho][sigma]X] pour exprimer l'effet d'un substituant en position méta ou para d'un cycle sur les réactions de la chaîne latérale d'un système aromatique. Dans cette équation, [sigma]X est une constante caractéristique du substituant X et de sa position dans la molécule du réactif.

Plus généralement, lorsqu'on utilise différents ensembles de paramètres [sigma] modifiés (annotés par des indices et exposants appropriés) dans des corrélations empiriques [rho-sigma], les paramètres [rho] servent à caractériser la sensibilité à n'importe quel effet de substituant pour différentes familles de composés, aromatiques ou non, impliqués dans diverses réactions. La valeur de [rho] est positive quand les substituants de constante [sigma] positive accélèrent la réaction ou augmentent sa constante d'équilibre. Puisque, par définition, les substituants qui augmentent l'acidité de l'acide benzoïque ont une valeur [sigma] positive, ces substituants sont considérés comme des attracteurs d'électrons du cycle aromatique. Par conséquent, une réaction qui présente une valeur positive de [rho] comporte un état de transition (ou un produit réactionnel) dont la différence d'énergie avec les réactifs décroît quand la densité électronique au centre réactionnel du substrat diminue.

Abstract of the disclosure. Membrane separation under perstraction conditions of a lube oil distillate is disclosed which produces a retentate rich in non-aromatics hydrocarbons and alkyl aromatic and a permeate rich in multi-ring aromatics. The recovered retentate is similar to a solvent extracted raffinate but possesses a higher concentration of alkyl-single ring aromatics. The membrane separation process is highly selective for removing multi-ring aromatics from the lube distillate.

Aromatic compounds contain unusually stable ring structures, often made up of six carbon atoms arranged hexagonally. Some of the compounds, however, have rings with more or fewer atoms, not necessarily all carbon. Furan, for example, has a ring with four atoms of carbon and one of oxygen. Also, two or more rings can be fused, as in naphthalene. The characteristic properties of the class, notably the stability of the compounds, derive from the fact that aromatic rings permit the sharing of some electrons by all the atoms of the ring, which increases the strength of the bonds.

Most aromatic rings are planar six-membered rings (e.g., benzene or pyridine) or planar five-membered rings containing a hetero atom with an unshared electron pair (e.g,, furan or pyrrole). Although aromatic rings are unsaturated, they do not undergo the addition reactions characteristic of alkenes; instead, aromatic compounds are characterized by substitution reactions. Many organic compounds, such as naphthalene and purine, contain several aromatic rings fused together.

It appears that human, because of the course of evolution, do not have biochemical ability to synthesize the benzene ring. As a result, phenylalanine and tryptophan derivatives are essential in the human diet.
