Atmospheric diving suits ... They can be used for very deep dives, 600 metres / 2000 feet, for many hours without the normal hazards of depth, such as the decompression sickness or nitrogen narcosis. They look like suits of armour, with elaborate pressure joints to allow articulation while resisting the large difference between the inside and outside pressure. They are often constructed from aluminium, weigh around 250 kg / 500 pounds and have propellors allowing them to move in water. Often they are lowered from a support vessel, which supplies breathing gas, electric power and communications to the suit through an umbilical cable. The suit may incorporate a rebreather-type breathing system in the event of an emergency where the umbilical supply fails. 2, record 27, English, - atmospheric%20diving%20suit

The Empowerment Approach. Empowerment is the most recent approach, articulated by Third World women. Its purpose is to empower women through greater self-reliance. Women's subordination is seen not only as the problem of men but also of colonial and neo-colonial oppression. It recognizes women's triple role, and seeks to meet strategic gender needs indirectly through bottom-up mobilization around practical gender needs... Most feeders consist of an articulated, electrically powered arm with a spoon at its end, a plate on a rotating turntable and an auxiliary arm that may be used to push food on to the spoon. The user controls, through the use of switches, the movement of the different components. Although such feeding aids can be used effectively, there are several reasons why their use is not as widespread as one would expect. 1, record 43, English, - feeder

As a person acquires and organizes knowledge into chunks and networks, the knowledge becomes compiled. Some individuals compile knowledge into more and more abstract and theoretical patterns (deep knowledge). Others compile knowledge as a result of practical experience (surface knowledge). N. Chomsky describes his pursuit in theoretical terms as a search for universal grammar(or U. G.) U. G. is genetically determined at its initial state(in the organism) and is specified, sharpened, articulated, and refines under conditions set by experience, to yield the particular grammars found in specific groups of individuals(1980, p. 234). A theory of universal grammar is said to be an explanatory theory. To know a language is to be in a certain state of mind/brain : this state is described by a core grammar which consists of certain principles of universal grammar, which are to be discovered by linguists. Thus, Chomsky takes a purely realistic stance : language knowledge is a series of states in the brain... Now he has come to the conclusion that it is more productive to speak of various principles that govern language use. These principles begin in human biology. They determine the kinds of grammar that are available in principle(Chomsky 1979). The principles of U. G. are various subsystems, which go by names like binding theory, control theory, government, theta theory, and the like-each of which features a limited degree of parametric variation. 2, record 76, English, - universal%20grammar

Wenger presents the now standard idea of compiled vs. articulated knowledge(terms that are preferable, in my mind, to shallow and deep). He presents a rationale for why knowledge could(and should) be compiled for specific purposes. He also presents a useful breakdown of the characteristics of knowledge articulation : the completeness of its contents(including justification), its structure or organization(e. g. abstractness or generality), and its epistemological characteristics(e. g. is it commonsense, causal, taxonomic). 1, record 95, English, - articulated%20knowledge
