CONT

As stated above, recreational dive planners are for "no-decompression" diving. That's unfortunately a rather ambiguous term because, of course, we do decompress as we ascend to the surface again. What it really means is that the data in the tables shows the length of time you can stay at a certain depth and still be able to ascend without making mandatory scheduled "decompression stops. "

A knot that is used in mountaineering for tying a small sling to a climbing rope ... and that holds fast when weighted but is movable when unweighted.

CONT

The good old prusik knot is very, very useful. All you need is a loop of cord which you can make using 6 or 7 mm accessory cord and a double fisherman's knot. With one or two prusiks you can ascend a rope, or rig a z-pulley to haul up an injured climber, or backup an abseil.

CONT

CONT

The Klemheist knot(or Machard knot) is a type of friction hitch used as a part of a system to ascend or descend a climbing rope.... A Prusik loop is wrapped round the climbing rope two or three times. The loop is then threaded through itself and carefully tightened to wrap the climbing rope neatly. In use, strain must only be taken on the hanging loop. Never grip and pull on the knot itself-a rapid descent can occur! If the knot slips when load is placed on the hanging loop, wrap the loop around the climbing rope another time or two as necessary until there is no slippage.

CONT

The knot is tied with a thin cord, usually 5 mm or 6 mm in diameter, onto the rope. The climber then attaches himself to the knot by clipping the cord onto his harness. Progress up a fixed rope is made by sliding the knot up the rope and then weighting or loading it with the climber’s weight. When loaded, the Klemheist knot cinches onto the climbing rope, allowing the climber to progress upward. When the knot is unloaded, it loosens, allowing the climber to slide it up the rope.

A mechanical device that can be slid along a rope in only one direction and that is used to connect loads to ropes so that they can be advanced up the rope without their sliding back down.

CONT

Mechanical ascenders are used to ascend fixed ropes and are normally sold in pairs. Ascenders are also employed for rescue work and in hauling loads on multi-day walls. It should be noted that no manufacturer recommends their device for belaying or soloing(autobelaying solo leads).

OBS

Most ascending devices have some sort of cam that grips the rope. A safety latch or a similar security system permits attachment and prevents unanticipated removal during an ascent.

The inside hand reaches up and grasps the axe head in the self-arrest position. By pulling down on the anchored axe, the climber steps up to a new in-balance position. ... the lithosphere, including the mechanical boundary layer, may be thinned by thermal stripping from below, allowing the plume mantle to ascend and decompress further.

CONT

The lithosphere, a thermal and mechanical boundary layer ... consists of a buoyant and mineralogically diverse component (the crust) and a solid upper mantle with more uniform characteristics.

CONT

... both deformed and undeformed spinel peridotite xenoliths ... are derived from a region of depleted mantle which probably forms the cool mechanical boundary layer immediately beneath the continental crust.

CONT

The mechanical boundary layer or lithosphere is the rigid cold upper layer of the earth and is closely related to the thermal boundary layer.

In 1882 the brothers Carmagalle took out a patent for an armour-plated diving suit. The most satisfactory modern version of this apparatus is the rigid jointed Neufeldt-Kuhnke type, which is lowered and raised by means of a cable and allows the diver to observe and make limited movements.

CONT

Following Lethbridge and Rowe’s exploits there was little to no mention of the armoured diving suit until 1838, an almost 80 year lull from Lethbridge’s death in 1759. ... W.H. Taylor designed the first known armoured diving suit with articulating joints in 1838. The suit was to be surface-supplied and had accordion-like joints of spring steel, reinforced and water sealed with leather. From his drawing, it seems that either Taylor had no intentions of his suit being a true atmospheric diving suit, or else had no understanding of the depth-pressure relationship. The suit appeared to exhaust directly into the surrounding water from a short hose located at the divers waist. Therefore, the interior pressure would have had to be greater than the water pressure at depth. Also, the soft cloth joints of the suit would have most likely collapsed when exposed to any considerable pressure.

CONT

Where diving operations are carried out during the course of a drilling program, the operator shall ensure that the divers do not, except in the case of an emergency involving the safety of personnel, carry out operations at, descend to or ascend from a work site located at a depth of 50 m or more unless the descent and ascent are carried out in and the operations are carried out from a submarine, an armoured diving suit, a diving bell or other diving vehicle.

The denil type fishway is, essentially, a short section of flume in which baffles of various shapes and sizes have been affixed to the sidewalls and floor. The energy of the water passing through the central open section of the structure is dissipated in turbulence caused by the baffles, leaving a narrow corridor of low velocity flow through which salmon can ascend without difficulty.

There are 20 different trails in Glacier National Park with 13 of them in the Rogers Pass area much suited to day hiking. So plan a trip, camp at Illecillewaet Campground, and enjoy the Mountains. Some of the trails in this area are steep shortly after leaving the trailhead, but eventually grade lessens and you are rewarded with spectacular views of distant peaks and icefields. These two trails follow the same path initially and then split just after crossing 2 creeks. The left fork, the Sir Donald Trail, continues up to the base of Mount Sir Donald with excellent views of the nearby Vaux Glacier. If you look way up on the left-hand skyline of Mount Sir Donald, you may catch glimpses of climbers as they ascend the famous Northwest Ridge. This trail is 4 kilometres(2. 5 miles) long with an elevation gain of 915 metres(3000 feet) and takes 1. 5-2. 5 hours one way.

HyperSoar would ascend to about 39, 000 metres, lofting outside the Earth's atmosphere. Then it would turn off its engines and coast back to the surface of the atmosphere, where it would again fire its engines and skip back into space. The craft would repeat this process until it reached its destination.... Passengers would feel 1. 5 times the force of gravity at the bottom of each skip and weightlessness while in space[, ] comparable to the effect felt on a child's swing, though HyperSoar's motion would be 100 times slower.

Deep diving systems. With the increase in offshore oil and gas drilling, and with offshore mining being contemplated, a more efficient system of diving deep has been developed. This system, called either deep dive system(DDS) or advanced dive system(ADS), incorporates a pressurized personnel transfer capsule(PTC), like an elevator, in which the divers ascend and descend rapidly to working depths. The divers, employing mixed-gas hookah breathing apparatus and wearing lightweight suits, emerge from the PTC to work.

There are many different approaches to region formation including the use of histograms, clusters, relaxation or cluster labels, and the further application of R-trees.... One simple data-driven region formation scheme based on R-trees illustrates the general process. This scheme, called the splinter rule, eliminates local low contrast texture and forms larger regions in the following manner. All maximal sets of consecutive peaks are located in the intensity profile whose valleys strictly ascend and then strictly descend in height from left to right. The peaks in each such "peak group" are merged into a new peak whose height and location are that of the highest peak in that "peak group".

This is a paroxysmal extension of the Vulcanian and Strombolian types, the new and specific feature being the extremely violent expulsion of magma which has become highly charged with gas during a long interval of superficial quiescence or mild activity. Because of the concentration of streams of explosive gas through the conduit, while coherent lava flows are escaping from fissures and vents on the flanks..., the conduit may be emptied of lava down to a considerable depth.... the underlying magma bursts into an explosive spray and expels itself through the crater as vast clouds of "cauliflower" form, which may be brightly luminous when seen at night. These ascend to great heights, and from them showers of ashes are widely distributed.
