ATTITUDE CONTROL WHEEL [7 records]

Record 1 2007-04-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Navigation Instruments
  • Spacecraft
OBS

gimballed momentum wheel : Better attitude control and energy storage can be achieved by using a pair of counter-rotating micro wheels. This configuration enables micro-satellites to change their angular momentum and orientation with very little net change in stored energy. Likewise, energy can be extracted or added to a pair of wheels without changing the satellite's attitude. Power can be saved while using a regenerative brake state to decrease the speed, or this braking energy can be used to accelerate the other micro-wheel rotating in the opposite direction in a gimballed momentum wheel. Thus, it can sustain spacecraft with limited power during a short-term space mission.

DEF

The software responsible for maintaining the attitude of the spacecraft.

CONT

The attitude control software is state-of-the-art and includes algorithms for despin, Sun and Earth orientation and capture, state-sampled network control, reaction wheel desaturation, attitude recovery and intraspacecraft communication.

OBS

In addition, it also performs several deployment operations as the spacecraft moves into its nominal attitude.

DEF

Three Axis Magnetometer [-] TAM... Redundant TAMs are provided to sense the local strength and direction of the Earth's magnetic field. Each TAM consists of a sensor and a separately packaged electronics unit. The analog outputs provided by the TAM allow for sensing magnetic field data in three orthogonal axes. TAM-Operation Once the TAM is powered there will be no ground interactions necessary. The TAM data is used by the FSW ACS [Flight Software Attitude Control Subsystem routine to determine the local magnetic field when reaction wheel momentum unloading is deemed necessary via the magnetic torque rods [Landsat].

OBS

three axis magnetometer; CAM: term and abbreviation officially approved by the RADARSAT-2 Terminology Approval Group (RTAG).

CONT

On peut mesurer ainsi l'intensité d'un champ magnétique axial. Certains magnétomètres plus sophistiqués peuvent mesurer un champ global selon ses 3 axes x, y et z. On parle alors de magnétomètre triaxial.

OBS

magnétomètre triaxial : terme uniformisé par le Groupe de travail de la terminologie de Radarsat-2 (GTTR0).

CONT

Spacecraft with more stringent pointing requirements use active attitude control systems. In an active attitude control system, mechanisms are used to deliberately apply a torque to the spacecraft. The mechanisms used to control attitude include momentum wheels, magnetic torquers, and thrusters. Momentum wheel control systems alter the attitude of a spacecraft by varying the speed at which the wheel spins.

In the EO-1 experiment, the PPT will control the spacecraft pitch axis, temporarily replacing the corresponding momentum wheel in the primary attitude control system. The PPT will be used to counter environmental torque, generally firing at minimum energy levels.
