... gyros and accelerometers have an offset, known as bias. The gyro bias for instance, shows itself after integration as an angular drift, increasing rise linearly over time(ramp)... To compensate for sensor drift, a process called augmentation is used, whereby gyro and acceleration errors are compensated by utilising other system states. For instance the angular drift error of a gyro after integration can be compensated, if true angular measurements are taken. Comparing the two shows then the gyro drift. Assuming that inertial systems are generally operated around an equilibrium position and thus linear acceleration integrates to zero over time, then attitude can be processed via gravitational acceleration, thus giving true angular measurements to compensate gyro drift. 1, record 3, English, - angular%20drift

Stabilisation. This stage will start automatically upon detection of the spacecraft separation from the launch vehicle. Spacecraft initialisation consists of switching on sensors : GPS, Magnetometer, Gyro and Sun Sensor. At launcher release, the spacecraft will autonomously recognise its angular rate, damp it and acquire controlled attitude. Upon success of de-spin and first sun acquisition, RADARSAT-2 will start to acquire a coarse stable 3-axes attitude. This process should take 2-3 orbits. 2, record 6, English, - stabilisation

Stabilisation. Cette étape débutera automatiquement lors de la détection de la séparation du satellite et du véhicule de lancement. L'initialisation du satellite consiste à allumer les capteurs tels le GPS, le magnétomètre, le gyro et le capteur solaire. Accurate positioning of the aircraft is essential during image acquisition. Accuracy of ± 1 m is achieved using a DGPS. Downelling irradiance is recorded so as to take into account the space-time variations in the solar altitude and the transparency of the atmosphere that occurs during image acquisition. A gyroscopic sensor records the data needed to correct the geometric distortions of the images. These distortions are due to variations in the attitude of the aircraft(essentially the roll). The ground resolution depends on the altitude from which the images are collected. 1, record 11, English, - gyroscopic%20sensor

The basic attitude sensor was the three-gyro inertial reference package. It contained two air-tight integrating gyro units to sense pitch and yaw, and one miniature integrating gyro unit to sense roll. The pitch and roll gyros were torqued by signals obtained by two Barnes mod IIA infrared horizon sensors. Gyrocompassing oriented the vehicle to an orbit plane yaw reference by detecting a component of the programmed pitch rate through the roll horizon sensor. The geocentric pitch rate(typically 4 deg/min, for a low-altitude orbit) was programmed as a constant torque to the pitch gyro. This pitch component, if a yaw error was present, would be sensed differentially when compared with the roll components of the two horizon-sensor heads. The differential would be seen as a function of yaw error. 2, record 13, English, - roll%20component

2, record 14, English, - pitch%20component

During heading align, the rotor of the resolver is positioned so that it transforms the N-S and E-W liquid level signals into pitch and roll components which are referenced to heading. The pitch component is amplified, demodulated and summed with amplified and demodulated feedback signals from the VG [vertical gyro] roll and pitch pickoffs and the pitch synchro. The combined signal is then modulated, amplified and converted to DC [direct current] to drive the platform pitch gimbal torque motor until the input signals are nulled. 3, record 14, English, - pitch%20component

2, record 14, French, - composante%20en%20tangage

floated gyroscope... Because of the requirement that the allowable rotation angle be small (on the order of an arc-second), an electrical torquer is used to maintain the float fixed relative to the case; it is the current to the torquer that is used as the measure of angular rotation of the gyro and hence of the vehicle to which it is attached. 1, record 15, English, - electrical%20torquer

Attitude gyros, technically called vertical gyros because of the orientation of their spin axis, do precess, but correction is applied automatically. All attitude gyros have an automatic erection system that drives the gyro back to vertical when it precesses. The erection system detects gravity by means of a pendulous sensor that in turn opens air blast vanes on an air-driven gyro or powers electric torquer motors to drive the gyro back to vertical when it precesses. 3, record 15, English, - electrical%20torquer

Inertial sensors (gyroscopes and accelerometers) are used to obtain information on orientation and accelerations relative to a reference frame in which Newton’s laws are valid. Orientation or attitude measurements obtained by gyroscopes provide angular information, while acceleration measurements, which are corrected for gravity and, integrated twice for distance, provide linear information. 3, record 16, English, - inertial%20sensor

5, record 16, French, - capteur%20inertiel
