Planning of a multi-spectral auroral imaging observatory(AURIO) has been on its way for some years now in the ESA Programme(Stadsnes et al. 1987). In 1990 ESA selected AURIO together with an advanced particle and fields observatory, APAFO, to constitute the Space Science Elements in the Polar Platform Programme, but without accommodating these experiments on the first mission called ENVISAT-1. As of today it is not yet clear when AURIO will be flown. AURIO would provide images of the aurora in the IR, visible and UV-range, and of the X-ray aurora(from few keV to >100 keV) with much better spatial and temporal resolution than yet obtained. Together with the in-situ particle and fields measurements, this would enable studies of fine and medium-scale coupling processes between the magnetosphere and the upper atmosphere. 2, record 33, English, - auroral%20imaging%20observatory

Another type of aurora is known as pulsating aurora. This auroral type, while it is not as exciting to observe as a midnight breakup, is important because of the length of its occurrence and the amount of energy that it deposits into the ionosphere. There are two basic types of auroral disturbance.... those generated by transient or explosive activity on the visible surface of the Sun, typically solar flares, the frequency of which tends to increase or decrease according to the 11 year sunspot cycle [and those] generated by the continuous streams of particles emanating from the active regions of the sun that spray the earth each time the sun rotates. Typical regions are the coronal holes which are most active in the declining years of the sunspot cycle so that this type of aurora is most frequent after sunspot maximum. Such aurorae are quieter in form, may repeat themselves for several nights on end and then recur 27 days later after on rotation of the sun. 1, record 44, English, - auroral%20disturbance
