Luminous phenomena, in the form of arcs, bands, draperies, or curtains in the high atmosphere (caused by charged particules from space), mainly at high latitudes.

... the aurora is a luminous phenomenon occurring in the upper atmosphere at altitudes between about 100 km and 1000 km. Auroras are visible best from the auroral zone, the region about 15-30 degrees from each magnetic pole with the greatest frequency of aurorae.

Lors des perturbations du champ magnétique on observe sous des hautes latitudes des aurores polaires [qui] peuvent durer quelques minutes mais sont souvent visibles pendant plusieurs heures. Les aurores polaires se distinguent fortement quant à leur forme, couleur et intensité; de plus toutes ces caractéristiques varient souvent très rapidement dans le temps.
