The offload can be one of the most exciting and rewarding skills in the game of rugby union. The ability to deliver an accurate pass while in contact with the enemy is an art form in itself, and leads to high proportion of line break successes for the attacking side who can it execute well. The idea is that attacking play remains fluid and continuous just as the defence is preparing to stop and reset for another phase. The defenders think that the ball is momentarily "dead" after a tackle has been made and that there will be an opportunity to regroup. The offload shows unexpectedly that this will not be the case, and in that small moment there is a chink of light for the attack. 2, record 1, English, - offload

poaching: a strategy in doubles play in which the player closest to the net extends the range of his reach by cutting in front of his or her partner in order to attempt a volley on the return of serve intended for his partner waiting near the baseline. 3, record 21, English, - poach
Record number: 21, Textual support number: 2 OBS
There is a slight difference between "poaching" and "interception". The first term implies a resolve to move over to one's partner's side of the court, whether one is expecting to make contact with the ball or not. The second term implies less doubt as to whether the ball will come or not. It will come and the player will meet the ball to put it away. In general, the French term "interception" conveys both English meanings. In English, the term "poaching" denotes a strategy as well as a set of specific actions used in doubles play; the term "poach" is the result of these actions. The French term "braconnage" denotes the action, while the term "interception" denotes the result. Related terms : crisscrossing, switching, to intervene. 3, record 21, English, - poach

You can advance the cause of your pairing by improving the ability to use the player nearer the net [net guard] to intervene, or fake to do so, in the exchanges. The interception of the return of serve or a mid-rally shot will demonstrate your resolve to dominate that court position ... Even if your success rate is not all it could be, the threat you pose may be sufficient to earn other points, and to feint the interception when you have no intention of following through can induce a weak response which can be put away by your team-mate ... Caution : the Spanish term "recorrido" is generic. In its most basic meaning the term denotes the path of a moving object(=trajectory, flight), whether it be a racquet, a ball or even a human body(=route, course). In some contexts, it is obvious that "recorrido" refers to the «swing» of a racquet as it comes in contact with the ball. In other cases, other more precise English equivalents-backswing, upswing, downswing, follow through, route-are recommended. Furthermore, in English one speaks of the "flight" or "trajectory"(=ES : vuelo, trayectoria o recorrido; FR : trajectoire) of the ball, the "path"(=ES : trayectoria; FR : élan) of the(racquet) swing, and the "path" or "route"(=ES : recorrido) of a person. 3, record 23, English, - backswing

Record number: 24, Textual support number: 1 OBS
"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect]. 2, record 24, English, - shot

The Spanish term "cordaje" and the French cognate "cordage" are both collective nouns that denote the set of strings that make up the "stringbed". Another appropriate English equivalent would be "racquet strings" - in the plural. In comparison, the singular term "cuerda" denotes the thin material we call "string" in English. When used in the plural, "cuerdas" and "cordes" are synonomous with "cordaje" and "cordage" respectively. Another point to watch out for: the Spanish term "cordaje" is polysemous. It can denote the process of putting strings on a tennis racquet (=stringing) or it can denote the end product, i.e. the set of strings found on a tennis racquet. Various types of strings used today: multilfilament, multicore (with or without wraps), solid core, textured, unique, construction, hybrid. 3, record 25, English, - strings

1, record 37, French, - frapper%20le%20ballon%20en%20manchette

The ball is smaller than a football in order for the players to be able to hold and handle it with a single hand(though contact with both hands is perfectly allowed). Some American versions use a volleyball. It is transported by bouncing it between hands and floor-much as in basketball. A player may only hold the ball for three seconds and may only take three steps with the ball in hand. There are many variations, a common American version allows only 1 step with the ball, and afterward MUST pass the ball to another teammate or shoot. 4, record 47, English, - team%20handball%20ball

The usual tactic is to use the three permitted contacts in order to set the offence. Normally, the "pass" is made at the first contact of the ball. Record number: 76, Textual support number: 1 OBS
There is a slight difference between "poaching" and "interception". The first term implies a resolve to move over to one's partner's side of the court, whether one is expecting to make contact with the ball or not. The second term implies less doubt as to whether the ball will come or not. It will come and the player will meet the ball to put it away. In more general French term "interception" conveys both English meanings. In English, the term "poaching" denotes a strategy as well as a set of specific actions used in doubles play; the term "poach" is the result of these actions. The French term "braconnage" denotes the action, while the term "interception" denotes the result. Related terms : crisscrossing, switching, to intervene. 2, record 76, English, - poaching
