Vertical deflection of the muzzle above or below the barrel axis when laid, at the moment the projectile leaves the barrel. When the line of departure of the projectile is above the barrel axis when laid, jump is positive; if below, it is negative. Jump is caused by the vibrations transmitted to the barrel by the passage of the projectile and by the effect of the propellant charge. Not to be confused with climb caused by recoil and which occurs after the projectile has left the barrel.

The Parabellum-Pistole (Pistol Parabellum), popularly known as the Luger pistol is [a] semi-automatic self-loading pistol introduced by Deutsche Waffen und Munitions Fabriken starting in the 1890s. It existed primarily as a popular military and civilian handgun of the early 20th century.

The Parabellum pistol [is] extremely accurate, as a result of precise engineering tolerances, ergonomic grip angle and shape, descent trigger pull, and a design that requires the barrel remain aligned with the axis of the frame during operation(no tipping as in Browning designs).

Mechanism found in some recoil operated firearms in which two bars are linked to form a knee-joint, with one end of the joint attached to the bolt and the other to the slide or barrel extension.

On closure, the toggle straightens and locks by allowing the centre joint axis to fall slightly below the two end axes. The centre joint being supported in that slightly negative position, recoil pressure on the breech face tends only to strengthen the lock. Recoil is thus transferred via the linkage to the slide or barrel extension and so permit the bolt and barrel to recoil together locked firmly, until the toggle is unlocked by camming action, e. g. Maxim and Vickers machine-guns, 9 mm Luger pistol.
