Mechanism found in some recoil operated firearms in which two bars are linked to form a knee-joint, with one end of the joint attached to the bolt and the other to the slide or barrel extension. 2, record 8, English, - toggle%20action
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 OBS
On closure, the toggle straightens and locks by allowing the centre joint axis to fall slightly below the two end axes. The centre joint being supported in that slightly negative position, recoil pressure on the breech face tends only to strengthen the lock. Recoil is thus transferred via the linkage to the slide or barrel extension and so permit the bolt and barrel to recoil together locked firmly, until the toggle is unlocked by camming action, e. g. Maxim and Vickers machine-guns, 9 mm Luger pistol. 2, record 8, English, - toggle%20action

1, record 8, French, - m%C3%A9canisme%20%C3%A0%20genouill%C3%A8re
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 OBS

System of operation common in sub-machine-guns and in which the primer is struck and the cartridge is fired while the bolt is still moving forward. The explosion force has to stop the moving bolt before causing it to recoil, introducing a fractional delay between firing and breech opening, thus permitting the bullet to leave the barrel. This system absorbs some recoil energy and allows the bolt to be lighter. 2, record 9, English, - advanced%20primer%20ignition

Record number: 9, Textual support number: 1 DEF
1, record 9, French, - avance%20de%20la%20mise%20%C3%A0%20feu
