A primer pop(squib load) happens when the cartridge does not contain any gunpowder. The firearm will discharge the primer without the usual noise or recoil. This may have enough force to push the bullet out of the case, but the bullet may lodge in the barrel. On closure, the toggle straightens and locks by allowing the centre joint axis to fall slightly below the two end axes. The centre joint being supported in that slightly negative position, recoil pressure on the breech face tends only to strengthen the lock. Recoil is thus transferred via the linkage to the slide or barrel extension and so permit the bolt and barrel to recoil together locked firmly, until the toggle is unlocked by camming action, e. g. Maxim and Vickers machine-guns, 9 mm Luger pistol. 2, record 6, English, - toggle%20action

Record number: 11, Textual support number: 1 DEF
Principle of operation of some automatic weapons, whereby the recoil energy imparted to the barrel is used to actuate the mechanism and perform the necessary cycle of operation. Two systems of recoil operation have been in use, as follows : a. Short recoil operation. The breechblock remains locked to the barrel only while the chamber pressure is high. This involves a barrel travel of only about 1/2 inch. The device locking the breechblock to the barrel is then released and the two components separate. The barrel may remain stationary and await the return of the breechblock, but in most modern designs the barrel has its own spring and goes forward into battery, e. g.. 50 calibre heavy machine-gun. b. Long recoil operation. The barrel and locked breech recoil a greater distance than the length of the cartridge. The breechblock is then held to the rear while the barrel is driven forward by its own spring. When the barrel is fully forward, it trips the catch releasing the breechblock, which then feeds the next cartridge into the chamber. Mainly encountered in semi-automatic shotguns. See also "Systems of operation-Automatic weapons". 1, record 11, English, - recoil%20operation

Fonctionnement par long recul.
