BARREL WEAR [8 records]

Record 1 2011-11-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weapon Systems (Land Forces)
  • Target Acquisition
CONT

... the gun barrels are fitted with muzzle velocity sensors, which are linked to the fire control computer, so the actual speed of the round can be taken into account when the computer calculates the lead angle necessary to hit a moving target. This is necessary as the speed of the round when leaving the barrel may vary depending on the ammunition manufacture date and age, moisture content, the barrel wear, etc.

CONT

Projectile muzzle velocity sensor mounted on T-84 MBT [main battle tank] turret roof. As an option, the tank fire-control system can also include a projectile muzzle velocity sensor, which measures the velocity in question and feeds information to the tank’s fire control ballistic computer after each firing of the gun to allow to automatically correct for gun bore wear, charge temperature and other factors.

Subject field(s)
  • Ballistics
DEF

Tabulation or chart which provides data of reference trajectories of projectiles that may be fired from a given weapon under certain standard conditions, e.g. elevation, charge, range, velocity, maximum ordinate, etc.

OBS

It may also include data to calculate corrections or the effect of prevalent conditions, e. g. climatic conditions, charge temperature, variations in the weight of projectiles, barrel wear, etc.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Balistique
DEF

OBS

CONT

MILES is a system the Army uses for wargames. You mount a small box, the transmitter, on the end of the barrel of your weapon, and wear a harness that has several straps on the front and back with infrared receptors on them. You also have a key that is normally in the transmitter to enable it. The transmitter has a microphone in it, and whenever a shot is fired, the sound causes it to fire a coded IR laser beam. The sensors on the harness are wired to a box on the back which detects when you have been hit. If you are, a beeper starts sounding loudly. To turn it off you have to take the key out of the transmitter, thus disabling it, and put it in a switch in the harness. Then you are "dead", and have to wait for an observer to come around with a special key that can reset the harness. They can also use the God gun, which is so called because it can fire pulses that will "kill" you like the other transmitters, but it can also fire pulses that reset your harness(bring you back to life...)

DEF

Barrel in which the bore has been formed through a pneumatic or hydrau-rotary hammer forge.

CONT

The cold-forged barrel is rifled with four polygonal grooves, reducing bullet friction and wear, and enhancing the accuracy of the weapon.

DEF

Normal wear of the bore of a firearm caused by the passage of bullets and scouring or, abnormal wear of the bore caused by the improper use of cleaning equipment, unauthorized cleaning material or by the presence of grit and other foreign materials in the bore when firing.

Subject field(s)
  • Equipment (Oil and Natural Gas Extraction)
  • Boring and Drilling (Mines)
  • Drilling and Boring (Construction)
DEF

A tool employed in drilling and used for smoothing the wall of a well, enlarging the hole to the desired size, stabilizing the bit, straightening the wellbore where kinks or doglegs are encountered, and drilling directionally.

CONT

The outside surface of the reaming shell is provided with inset diamonds or other cutting media set to a diameter to cut a specific clearance for the core barrel.

CONT

Reaming shells maintain the desired diameter of the [bore] hole. These make it unnecessary to ream with new bits to the bottom, reduce wear on the core barrel, and prevent sticking of bits due to loss of gauge.

Ballistic hump is used to describe the situation where the MV(muzzle velocity) of a new barrel rises rapidly to a peak as more rounds are fired, reaches a maximum value, and then falls to a level comparable with the state of wear.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Artillerie de campagne
