There was... concern that diagnosis-driven precautions were inadequate, in that they did not address potential transmission from body substances of asymptomatic colonized patients. To address this concern, a new isolation system, called body substance isolation, was created in which barrier precautions were tailored to the activity performed rather than the diagnosis. This system extended barrier precautions to all direct contact with blood, body fluids, secretions and moist body substances, and with non-intact skin. Gloves were used for all such contacts. Gowns, masks and eye protection were recommended for procedures in which soiling or splashing was anticipated.... The goal was to prevent transmission by preventing contamination of the HCW's [healthcare worker's] hands. 3, record 1, English, - body%20substance%20isolation

1, record 1, French, - pr%C3%A9cautions%20applicables%20aux%20liquides%20organiques

The skin is a vital organ that covers the entire outside of the body, forming a protective barrier against pathogens and injuries from the environment. The skin is the body's largest organ; covering the entire outside of the body, it is about 2 mm thick and weighs approximately six pounds. It shields the body against heat, light, injury, and infection. The skin also helps regulate body temperature, gathers sensory information from the environment, stores water, fat, and vitamin D, and plays a role in the immune system protecting us from disease. 2, record 2, English, - skin

In the flotation process, clinging of a particle to air-water interphase or to a bubble. Fundamentally, adhesion is the force between two unlike substances ... due to molecular attraction at an interface. 5, record 8, English, - adhesion
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 CONT
A particle which had its surface fully covered by collector would find it difficult... to cling to an air-water interface completely packed with frother molecules. The incompleteness of adsorption of the contacting phases is an important factor in attachment. Mineralizing contact may result from collision between bubble and particle, from precipitation of gas from water or through a mixed process in which precipitation initiates contact. Tests... showed that attachment on collision with a coursing bubble increases with the density of the particle concerned, which by its greater mass is better able to break through the slipstream or energy barrier surrounding the bubble. Other research supports this by showing how a minute bubble, such as might result from precipitation, initiates bubble attachment or the build-up of a buoyant system.... The available gas also influences the kinetics of attachment. 6, record 8, English, - adhesion

A system of mining in which the distinguishing feature is the winning of 50 percent or more of the coal or ore in the first working. The coal or ore is mined in rooms separated by narrow ribs or pillars. The coal or ore in the pillars is won by subsequent working, which may be likened to top slicing, in which the roof is caved in successive blocks. The first working in rooms is an advancing, and the winning of the rib (pillar) a retreating method. The rooms are driven parallel with one another, and the room faces may be extended parallel, at right angles, or at an angle to the dip. 1, record 9, English, - room%2Dand%2Dpillar

The human lower intestine is populated by an enormous number of microbes... These microbes are separated from the rest of the body by only a thin layer of cells and mucous lining the intestinal tract. As long as the intestinal microbial population does not penetrate the intestinal barrier, they coexist in relative harmony and in fact play a valuable role in digestion and processing of essential nutrients. StratSat provides a geo-stationary platform at 20 km altitude capable of remaining on-station for up to five years. Payloads include high speed Internet services, direct broadcast TV, mobile telecommunication, etc. The envelope operates as a super-pressure hull(i. e. with no ballonet pressure control system). The hull will be of laminated fabric construction with Tedlar/Teflon, helium/weather barrier developed from AT-10/04. Multiple catenary curtain system supporting a payload module enclosed completely by the envelope. [The] payload module... comprises a single structural module with an externally mounted payload/mission system. The payload module provides a home for all of the airship's primary systems except for the propulsion system. The systems are close packed within the highly insulated module ensuring efficient heat and energy management. The payload module is pendulum stabilised within the envelope. The solar array provides the sole source of renewable energy for the airship. The array is placed over the upper quarter of the hull and extends over approximately three-quarters of the length of the craft. The array can be realigned to the daily sun location/angle by the roll rotation of the whole airship. The energy collected by the solar array is stored for use during the night in the series of batteries. Located in the stored for use during the night in a series of batteries. Located in the payload module, the batteries run the propulsion system, airship services and provide power to the mission system for up to 14 hours(during winter). The airship is propelled and steered by means of a ’Contra-Rotating Coned Rotor’ mounted on a tailcone at the rear of the envelope, as a part of a compound propulsion system. The unit provides longitudinal thrust(to counter the prevailing stratospheric winds) and lateral force(for manoeuvering) to enable the airship to hold station within a 1 km cube. The airship will be equipped with a multi-channel Flight Control Sy 7, record 14, English, - StratSat%C2%AE

Energetech Australia is building a prototype electricity generator based on wave power on the breakwater at Port Kembla in New South Wales. A submerged chamber is open below the water level. When the waves rise up around the chamber, the water inside the chamber rises and falls with the waves. This compresses and decompresses air above the water in the chamber, creating airflow which drives a turbine. The turbines work with the air flowing in both directions. The blades change angle, depending on the speed and direction of the airflow … An ocean wall in the shape of a parabola concentrates the wave energy onto a central point where the power station is located … The amount of converted energy depends on the wind speed, the time the wind blows over the waves, and the distance it covers. During a wave’s voyage, it shapes into a more regular wave, commonly referred to as a swell. At ocean shores, swells are very regular and discernable, even when the sea is calm. 1, record 18, English, - wave%20energy%20breakwater

5, record 25, French, - barri%C3%A8re%20de%20diffusion

Cap Mats and Strips. Matrix Technologies EVA cap mats and strips are engineered to maintain a strong seal at all times on tubes, microplates and blocks.... Each cap mat features alphanumeric designations as well as traditional row and column indicators to simplify orientation of the cap mat over the corresponding tubes or wells. 1mL cap mats or strips effectively seal 0. 75mL tubes, 1. 4mL tubes, 1mL blocks and 96 well microplates.... The SepraSeal [trademark] Cap Mat System allows each tube in a 96-tube rack to be sealed individually as easily as applying a standard cap mat. After the mat is sealed on the rack, simply remove the backing plate to leave each tube individually sealed. Caps are made of an advanced elastomer and offer an excellent vapor barrier for both water and DMSO even at temperatures down to-80°C. Sepraseal caps can be... pierced and resealed and are available as solid caps or pre-slit for easier piercing. For ease of use and maximum efficiency, we offer the SepraSeal cap-removal tool that can be used to remove a single cap or an entire row at once. Caps can then be reinserted into tubes or ejected. Pigeon Proofing. Pigeon guano often creates as much damage to a heritage building as moisture penetration. Sills, ledges, open towers and belfries are usually excellent resting places for such birds. Pigeon guano is highly hazardous and acidic and will prematurely corrode metal flashings and stain masonry. Roof Tile Management often recommends the installation of a stainless steel pigeon deterrent system such as that manufactured by Nixalite of America. Other blow molding operations.... Fluorination surface treatment is a process to improve the gas barrier of polyethylene to nonpolar solvents. A barrier is created by the chemical reaction of the fluorine and the polyethylene, which form a thin(20-40 nm) fluorocarbon layer on the bottle surface. Two systems are available for creating the layer. The "in-process" system uses fluorine as a part of the parison expand gas in the blowing operation. The "post-treatment" system requires bottles to be placed in an enclosed chamber filled with fluorine gas. The method forms a barrier layer on both the inside and outside surfaces. This surface treatment allows low-cost, blow-molded polyethylene bottles to be used for paint, paint thinner, lighter fluid, polishes, cleaning solvents, cosmetics, and toiletries. The approach can replace other higher cost resins or coextrusion processes. 1, record 42, English, - fluorination%20surface%20treatment

Geomembranes are very low permeability membrane liners and barriers used with any geotechnical engineering based material so as to control fluid migrations in man-made project, structure or system. The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as : synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. 1, record 50, English, - geomembrane%20liner
