The azimuth direction is perpendicular to the range direction. The resolution of an image in the azimuth directions for a SAR image is constant and is independent of the range. For two objects to be resolved, they must be separated in the azimuth direction by a distance greater than the beamwidth on the ground.

The angular measure of the transverse section of a beam, usually the main beam, lying within directions corresponding to specified values of field strength relative to the maximum.

Beamwidth is a measure of the width of the radiation pattern of an antenna. For SAR [Synthetic Aperture Radar] applications, both the vertical beamwidth, affecting the width of the illuminated swath, and the horizontal or azimuth pattern, which determines, indirectly, the azimuth resolution, are frequently used. Beamwidth may be measured in the one-way or two-way form and in either voltage or power.

A radar system where the antenna beamwidth is controlled by the physical length of the antenna.

For a real aperture radar, the physical antenna length must be considerably longer than the wavelength in order to achieve higher azimuth resolution. Obviously, it has a limit at which the dimension of the antenna is not realistic to be put onboard an aircraft or a satellite.
