BELOW-GROUND VAULT [9 records]

Record 1 2010-04-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Waste Management
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
CONT

... the concept of deep geological disposal in stable rock formations is a fully acceptable method of disposing permanently of high-level radioactive wastes from the nuclear fuel cycle.

OBS

... the Federal Republic of Germany has chosen the policy that all radioactive waste will be placed in deep geological formations. The Asse salt mine, located in a salt diapir in Lower Saxony, has served as the national R&D facility on disposal of all types of radioactive waste.

OBS

Of the various disposal concepts which have been suggested for LLW, only three were compatible with the geological characteristics of the CRNL property : burial in excavated sand trenches... ;containment in an engineered below-ground vault; and emplacement in a shallow mined cavity in rock.

OBS

Emplacement of wastes in abandoned mines.

Domaine(s)
  • Gestion des déchets
  • Déchets nucléaires
CONT

CONT

A number of disposal methods for nuclear fuel wastes have been suggested internationally, including ejection of the waste into outer space; transmutation of the radioactive elements; emplacement in a polar ice cap; and burial within various geological formations, both on the continents and beneath the sea floor.

CONT

Of the various disposal concepts which have been suggested for LLW, only three were compatible with the geological characteristics of the CRNL property : burial in excavated sand trenches with minor engineered features to inhibit nuclide migration, containment in an engineered below-ground vault; and emplacement in a shallow mined cavity rock.

CONT

CONT

Of the various disposal concepts which have been suggested for low-level wastes, only three were compatible with the geological characteristics of the CRNL property : burial in excavated sand trenches with minor engineered features to inhibit nuclide migration; containment in an engineered below-ground vault; and emplacement in a shallow mined cavity in rock.

CONT

Mined caverns. Rock cavities can provide a high degree of containment and isolation for waste if suitable geologic conditions are present. ... Preferred characteristics of the host rock are: low frequency of open fractures to restrict groundwater flows, definable structure so that uncertainties in advance of excavation are low, and good rock competence so that adequately sized chambers can be excavated safely.

Geological disposal .... Five ... countries have selected granite formations for the underground disposal vaults, one a volcanic tuff formation, one a salt formation, and one a clay formation. The other countries are studying disposal in granite, salt, clay, and sedimentary rock.

CONT

CONT

In the below-ground vault option, the major characteristics are that :-wastes are placed below grade in a reinforced-concrete vault in a suitable hydrogeological site;-the vault is covered with a thick concrete roof, covered in turn by a thick layer of earth;-structural stability is provided by the facility itself;-the voids between the waste packages may be filled with sand or the wastes may be compacted by heavy equipment and-no additional engineered barriers are required.
