English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

A belt of persistent high atmospheric pressure trending east-west and centered about latitude 30° N and S.

CONT

tropical easterlies: Low latitude wind system of persistent air flow from east to west between the two subtropical high pressure belts.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

Record 4 2004-10-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Term sometimes applied to the trade winds when they are shallow and show pronounced vertical wind shear.

CONT

A high pressure area over Antarctica--associated with extremely cold and dense air is ringed by easterly winds which form the boundary with the subpolar low pressure belt. These typical features vary in intensity and location according to the season. For instance, in summer the high pressure belt is usually found just south of Australia, while the subtropical easterlies cover most of the continent.

OBS

subtropical easterlies: term rarely used in the singular (subtropical easterly).

Key term(s)
  • subtropical easterly
  • sub-tropical easterlies
  • sub-tropical easterly

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

Record 5 1993-12-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Papermaking Machines
  • Paper Manufacturing Processes
CONT

A totally new type of press was introduced in 1981. The "Extended-Nip Press" features a very wide nip to give the sheet a long dwell time at high pressure. When used as the last nip, this press provides not only a much drier sheet, but also a stronger sheet due to improved consolidation of the web structure.... Key components are the stationary pressure shoe and the impervious elastomer belt, which form the bottom portion of the double-felted nip. The shoe is continuously lubricated by oil to act as a slip bearing for the belt.

OBS

The Extended Nip Press is a product of Beloit Corp.

CONT
