Bench Method. Whichever hauling equipment or technique you choose, you must get as close as possible to the trunks to be loaded or bring them as close as possible to the trail to facilitate loading. The bench method can enable you, with reasonable effort, to bring the felled trees manually to within a 10-metre radius of the track. This method consists in creating a workbench from the felled trees themselves. It enables you to work with your back straight and to move the trunks without unreasonable effort. The first tree is felled and prepared so as to act as a support for other trees that will be felled on top of it. It must be quite steady, since the impact and weight of felled trees can crush the support and make it less useful. 1, record 12, English, - bench%20method

1, record 12, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20de%20l%27%C3%A9tabli

"Bulling" or chambering of holes. The bottom of a small diameter borehole(such as diamond drill or wagon drill hole) may be enlarged by lighting and dropping a gelatine dynamite safety fuse primer into the hole. The burden is of course, too great for this small charge to break the ground. Its effect is to pulverize the rock in the vicinity and to expel it from the mouth of the hole in the form of dust. Meanwhile, the bottom of the hole has been increased in diameter in the form of a bulbous-shaped chamber, which will then accommodate a larger quantity of explosive. Care should be taken to allow the bottom of the hole to cool down before adding further explosives. The operation is variously called "bulling" or "chambering" or "springing". The method has been used chiefly in quarry work on bench holes. 5, record 13, English, - springing

Le "pochage" consiste à faire exploser au fond d'un trou, en les renouvelant plusieurs fois, de petites charges d'explosifs. This method uses Clerical Bench Mark Tables and the comparison concept. Reliable standards are set based on a range of time in which a given job will probably be done by a qualified person. In effect, a given job is compared with other similar jobs on the Bench Mark Tables. Time alone is not compared. The work content of the job must also be considered on an overall basis. It is these two factors that are considered when the comparison is made. For example, a job may be classified as a "C" job, not necessarily because of any specific bench mark in Standard Work Group "C", but because of the work content of the bench marks in group "C", plus the work content of the bench marks in the two adjoining work groups, namely "B" and "D". In effect, the job is slotted "C" because of the work content of the bench mark jobs in groups "B", "C" and "D". 1, record 17, English, - slotting

Blocking knife .... The blade is forged to an iron bar varying in length from 1 to 4 ft. This bar has a hook at one end, and a handle, often T-shaped, at the other. The hook engages with an eye-bolt fixed to a bench or stool to form a hinge. In operation, one hand holds the wood to be shaped, while the other, by moving the knife up and down, pares away the unwanted wood, using the bar as a lever. The longer [size] ... is used by cloggers, brush, and by boot-last and boot-tree makers; the smaller sizes are used for shaping rake tines, tent pegs, wooden spoons, etc. 2, record 18, English, - bench%20knife
