The rack deadlift is a partial version of the conventional deadlift. You perform it inside a power rack with pins set so that the bar is located just above the knees. It is an excellent exercise for beginners–you don’t have to use a full ROM [range of movement], and having the rack is like using a spotter. Deadlifts from a racked position emphasize your low back muscles, because you won’t be bending as low and thereby incorporating your legs. Use this exercise to help strengthen the low back specifically or if you want to attempt heavier weights than you can lift from the floor.

CONT

Begin this exercise using a shoulder-width stance with the arms just outside the thighs. Using an overhand grip, bend the knees slightly to grasp the bar. Inhale. Exhale as you pull the weight off the pins, keeping the back flat, the abs tight, the head up, and the weights close to the body. Don’t bounce the bar off the pins in the rack.

Split jerk instructions.... Inhale and position chest high with torso tight. Keeping pressure on heels, dip body by bending knees and ankles slightly. Explosively drive upward with legs, driving barbell up off shoulders. Drop body downward and split one foot forward and other backward as fast as possible while vigorously extending arms overhead. The split position places front shin vertical to floor with front foot flat on floor. The rear knee is slightly bent with rear foot positioned on toes. The bar should be positioned directly over ears at arms length with back straight. Push up with both legs. Position feet side by side by bringing front foot back partway and then rear foot forward. Return to shoulders and repeat.

The abrupt stop that produces a spectacular shower of ice flakes is called the skid stop and is frequently used by ice hockey players. It is too difficult a method for the beginner to learn at first.

The more advanced skid or hockey stop is accomplished by quarter-turning both feet sideways, bending the knees and counter-rotating the body at the last moment.

CONT

An alternative method for the more experienced skater is the snowplow or arrowhead stop. This is achieved by bringing both skates together to glide parallel, before forcing the heels outwards(keeping the toes of the skates about half a foot's length apart). The action is similar to the snowplow in skiing :bending the knees while inclining each blade on its inside edge.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Patinage
CONT
