BENDING LOAD [12 records]

Record 1 2020-03-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Structural Testing (Materials)
  • Structural Framework
CONT

The difference between [the two tensile strength tests] is the location of load application... In center-point loading..., the load is applied at the specimen midspan. In third-point loading, the load is applied at the third points along the test span. For the latter case, the middle third of the beam span is subjected to maximum bending moment, and thus maximum fiber stress.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Long-Distance Pipelines
CONT

A pipeline operated at varying temperatures due to occasional shut down of theproduction will expand at positive temperature changes. If the pipeline is not free toexpand but restrained by friction, the pipe will be subjected to an axial compressive load. If the force exerted by the pipe on the soil cover exceeds the vertical restraint created by the pipe's submerged weight, its bending stiffness and the soil cover, the pipe will tend to move in the vertical plane, and considerable displacements may occur.... This model is a consistent semi-analytical linearized procedure and may as such only be considered sufficiently accurate when the upheaval displacement is relatively small.

The bending of a beam or structure under an applied load, and which may be increased until the breaking strain is reached. The deflection may be small in amount, and the beam or structure return to its original form, or it may increase and accumulate, becoming permanently set(q. v.), or it may go farther and lead to fracture of the beam.

DEF

The Aztec word for a spear throwing stick device.

OBS

This projectile propulsion device preceded the bow and arrow. In general, a wooden or bone stick or board with a hand grip at one end and a spur or hook at the other end. The atlatl is used as an extension of the arm in throwing a spear or dart. The spear shaft is socketed and fits into the spur or hook of the Atlatl. Essentially the Atlatl lengthens the length of the spear thrower's arm and with loaded, spring-like, motion can provide the benefit of greater force and distance over that of the hand thrown spear. It is hypothesized that sometimes a stone weight(s)(a. k. a. : Bannerstone, Birdstone, Boatstone) was attached to the Atlatl to provide better balance or to load the device with a spring or bending effect or to diminish the "whoosh" noise created during the throwing process.

Domaine(s)
  • Anthropologie
CONT

DEF

A strength measurement that combines the Yield strength of the material and the load carrying capacity based on the material size and shape.

CONT

Resisting bending moment (RBM) [is] a calculation used to compare frames of different section modulus and of different material. It is the product of the section modulus times the yield strength of the frame material. The formula is expressed as: RBM = Section Modulus x Yield Strength.

CONT

The mainframe of a heavy or medium-duty truck or tractor consists of a pair of C-section rails running the vehicle's length... joined by C-, T-, L-or hat-section crossmembers.... "Resisting bending moment, "or RBM [is] measured in inch-pounds. RBM describes the frame's ability to withstand twisting forces as well as its carrying ability... A road tractor's frame might be built with an RBM of 1. 3 million to 1. 6 million inch-pounds, while a quad-rear-axle dump truck's frame might have an RBM of 3 million inch-pounds. Yes, those are torque values, because torque is what's applied to the frame as the vehicle rocks and rolls its way over a jobsite or roadway, and its load pulls and pushes on the frame.

DEF

One of a series of interlocking steel piles intended to resist lateral pressures.

CONT

Interlocking steel sheet-piles are now used more commonly than timber piles. The cross-section of the pile is such that for the minimum amount of metal, a pile of great strength in bending or direct load is obtained, thus permitting driving and extraction without distortion.(...) Steel sheet-piles are used not only for holding up the faces of excavations, cofferdams and similar temporary work, but for permanent structures such as quay or wharf walls, river-bank retaining walls, and the like.

OBS

Steel sheet piling is formed of flat or channel- or Z-shaped sections provided with edge interlock connections, and has a wide range of strength.

DEF
