BENDING STIFFNESS [10 records]

Record 1 2011-10-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Long-Distance Pipelines
CONT

A pipeline operated at varying temperatures due to occasional shut down of theproduction will expand at positive temperature changes. If the pipeline is not free toexpand but restrained by friction, the pipe will be subjected to an axial compressive load. If the force exerted by the pipe on the soil cover exceeds the vertical restraint created by the pipe's submerged weight, its bending stiffness and the soil cover, the pipe will tend to move in the vertical plane, and considerable displacements may occur.... This model is a consistent semi-analytical linearized procedure and may as such only be considered sufficiently accurate when the upheaval displacement is relatively small.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Prefabrication
  • Wood Products
  • Plywood
DEF

A panel which is faced on both sides with plywood or another suitable sheet material to provide strength.

CONT

Constructions consisting of plywood "skins" glued to wood stringers are often called stressed-skin panels. These panels offer efficient structural constructions for building floor, wall, and roof components. They can be designed to provide desired stiffness, bending moment resistance, and shear resistance.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Acoustics (Physics)
DEF

The frequency at which a sound wave incident upon a surface has a projected wavelength equal to the length of the bending wave excited in the surface material. The effect of this "trace matching" is a marked reduction in the sound transmission loss in the frequency region in which this occurs. The frequency is a function of the angle at which the sound impinges on the surface, the surface weight, and bending stiffness of the surface.

Domaine(s)
  • Acoustique (Physique)
CONT
