A brazier, usually made from old hoop iron, in which shavings and bits of wood can be burnt.

CONT

An open-ended cask is placed over the burning Cresset to warm up the wood and so make it more pliable for bending into its final barrel-shape form by means of the Truss Hoops. During the process the cask is mopped over with water and the Cresset sometimes splashed to produce steam... The Cresset is usually employed in any case to dry out the moisture from the cask after steaming, and this is said to shrink the fibres of the inside of the cask which helps to set the staves in barrel form.

Le feu intérieur. Une fois les douelles prêtes, commence le montage de la coque. Là, le tonnelier se fait voleur de feu. Après avoir mouillé le fût à l'extérieur, il le place au-dessus d'un brasero. Une demi-heure suffit à dissiper l'humidité, c'est le signe que les douelles sont assez chaudes pour être serrées sans casser.
