A turbanlike knot of small cords, made around a rope, spar, etc.

A Turk's head knot is a decorative knot with a basket weave pattern surrounding a cylinder shaped object. The name is used to describe the general family of all such knots rather than one individual knot. The most common use for the Turk's head is to mark the "king spoke" of a vessel' s wheel; when this spoke is upright the rudder is in a central position. Otherwise, the knot is used mostly for decoration, and occasionally as anti-chafing protection. The number of leads of a Turk's head is the number of crossings it makes as it goes around the circumference of the cylinder. The number of bends is the number of strands along the long axis of the cylinder. Depending on the number of leads and bends, a Turk's head may be tied using a single strand or multiple strands. Mathematically, the number of strands is the greatest common divisor of the number of leads and the number of bends; the knot may be tied with a single strand if and only if the two numbers are coprime. The knot was originally named because of its resemblance to a turban.

The Turk’s head knot is commonly used as a covering knot. Members of the Boy Scouts of America have taken a liking to tying a five bight, three lead variation which they call a "woggle."

Today all hot air balloon burners have one thing in common. They use liquid propane as their fuel source. When using liquid propane the burner has to serve a dual purpose. First it must convert the liquid propane to a vapor, so it can be burnt at the orifices to produce the heat that makes the balloon fly. Achieving this function is where each balloon manufacturer differs in burner design. If you compare the shape of the Avian burner coils to other manufacturers, you’ll notice it has a larger circular radius with few 90 degree bends in its preheat coils. The reason we design our burner coil this way is to utilize a very basic principle of fuel flow. "The fewer the restrictions to flow, such as tight bends in tubing, in the complete burner system, the greater the pressure will be when it is released at the burner orifices, giving a higher BTU [British thermal unit] output. "

Depuis l'avènement du brûleur à propane au début des années soixantes, il n'a pas beaucoup évolué. Le principe est très simple : le propane contenu dans des bouteilles est sous pression donc liquide. When the sun’s declination reaches 32°above the horizon, the lower and upper tangent arcs make contact, and the resulting ring is called the circumscribed halo. It touches the 22° halo above and beneath the sun. When the sun is just above 32°the circumscribed halo resembles a double oval. As the sun rises higher it becomes increasingly circular and draws nearer to the 22° halo. When the sun’s declination exceeds 70°, the circumscribed arc nearly coincides with the 22° halo.
