When the body is exposed to low penetrating radiation such as beta or low energy X rays, the skin, eyes and sometimes testes may be the most highly irradiated organs of the body. In order to assess the biological response following such exposures it is necessary to understand the radiobiology of the specific organs and, in particular, the identity and depth of the most radiosensitive cells. 1, record 1, English, - low%20penetrating%20radiation

2, record 3, French, - extraction%20d%27eau%20lourde

The word radiation is commonly used in several distinct although related senses.-First, it is a term for the process by which energy is transferred and is able to exert an effect at a distance without the need for any physical connection between source and receiver. In this broad sense, radiation includes energy transfer both by electromagnetic waves(as in the case of gamma rays, ultra-violet rays or radio waves) and by energetic particles(such as alpha or beta particles emitted from nuclei in the process of radioactive decay). The more precise terms "electromagnetic radiation" and "particulate radiation" differentiate between these two phenomena. 2, record 4, English, - corpuscular%20radiation

4, record 4, French, - rayonnement%20corpusculaire
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
5, record 4, French, - rayonnement%20corpusculaire
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 OBS
3, record 4, French, - rayonnement%20corpusculaire

The method by which incident radiation interacts with the medium to cause ionization may be direct or indirect. Electromagnetic radiations (X rays and gamma photons) are indirectly ionizing; that is, they give up their energy in various interactions with cellular molecules, and the energy is then utilized to produce a fast-moving charged particle such as an electron. It is the electron that then secondarily may react with a target molecule. Charged particles, in contrast, strike the tissue or medium and directly react with target molecules, such as oxygen or water. These particulate radiations are directly ionizing radiations. 1, record 16, English, - gamma%20photon

Lovelock developed a small detector intended for use with open tubular columns, and a new triode detector having a sensitivity 1000 times greater than his original detector... The triode detector... incorporates a ring electrode, in addition to the normal anode and cathode electrodes, which separates the background current(positive ions liberated by vapor/metastable argon reactions or collisions) of the primary electron stream from the signal current. Basically, both detectors are similar to the simple device in design : their brass or stainless steel chambers function as cathodes; their anodes of the same material are supported coaxially within the chamber by a polytetrafluoroethylene insulator; both contain ports for introduction and escape of the chromatographic column gas effluent from the detectors; and each have a suitable source of alpha or beta radiation. 1, record 24, English, - triode%20detector

Since the specified limit is for residual contamination, the use of swipes as a method of measurement may also lead to underestimating the true level of contamination, although it is useful for determining the amount of material which is readily removable at that time. Because of the above consideration, the recommended method of determining compliance with the criteria is through the use of a beta contamination monitor, properly calibrated for measuring the beta particles from natural uranium. If this instrument is used assuming that its entire response is due to beta radiation, any error will be in the safe direction. 1, record 28, English, - beta%20contamination%20monitor

1, record 28, French, - moniteur%20de%20contamination%20b%C3%AAta

The most common yardstick used to measure radiation is sieverts. One sievert of radiation produces the same effect on living creatures, regardless of the type of ionizing radiation(alpha, beta, or gamma). Smaller units that measure low levels of radiation are expressed in millisieverts(thousandths of a sievert) and microsieverts(millionth of a sievert). 1, record 29, English, - microsievert
