Finally, one of the main topics for discussion among the speakers was the relevance of aggregate indicators. "BIP 40" index, which originated in an initiative taken by an Inequality Alert Network(Réseau d’alerte sur les inégalités), is intended to be a barometer incorporating more than 60 statistical series concerning the various fields related to inequality and poverty, work, income, housing, education, health, the law.

DEF

Booster Zone. The highly-automated Guiana Propellant Plant(UGP) covers 300 hectares and comprises all the resources required for the casting of solid-propellant boosters. It is one of the few facilities in the world capable of supplying more than 400 metric tons of propellant required by each Ariane 5 launcher. The loaded segments are transferred from the UPG to the new Booster Integration Building(BIP). The BIP has a climate-controlled volume of 130, 000 m³, for a height of 55 meters. After preparation, the various segments are assembled in vertical position on a pallet in the integration cells.

CONT

The solid-propellant booster storage building(BSE) is located between the BIP [booster integration building] and the BIL [launcher integration building] and was built in order to prevent any production hold-ups in the BIP. The reason for this is that the two operational units use the same test installations, which means that there may be intermittent delays to booster deliveries. This building is currently capable of storing 4 boosters and offers the possibility of keeping production ahead of utilisation.

A specialized kind of intelligent programming assistant is a programming tutor. In this application, the assistant helps a novice programmer to learn programming rather than helping a expert programmer to construct programs. An interesting aspect of this application is that ... the assistant is expected to know much more about programming than the user. ... A key function of a programming tutor is to examine a program written by a student programmer, find any errors in it, and then explain the errors to the student in a way that will help the student learn.

CONT

With its curriculum information network, BIP uses a representational scheme that is more in the AI tradition. However, BIP's curriculum is an organization of topics, not an operational model of expertise. This limits BIP's diagnostic capabilities and its usefulness as an active programming tutor.

CONT

CONT

As an intelligent programming tutor, BIP is incomplete. The only form of advice it can give the student consists of hints stored with the different tasks, since it has no knowledge of design, coding or debugging. Furthermore, its feedback to the student is limited by its inability to diagnose logical errors. When a program has been completed, BIP simply tests it on a set of input/output pairs without any analysis of the algorithm, as do systems presented in Chapter 11. After a syntactic match on keywords has revealed the use or absence of certain constructs designated as necessary or forbidden for the task, the student is merely informed about language constructs that should or shouldn’t have been used.

CONT

MHO (Lesgold et al., 1987) is a system for learning principles of electricity that supports both free exploration and guided problem solving. Its tutoring component exploits the curriculum organization to implement the concept of steering testing. When it takes control of the interaction, MHO dynamically generates tasks - electrical circuits and questions about them - that have to fulfil two conditions. First, observing the student’s performance on each task should maximize the information made available concerning possible changes in her knowledge state. Second, each task should concentrate on elements of the curriculum that are in the current focus so that diagnostic information can direct the course of instruction.

An important concept for the design of diagnostic tests is that of a primitive subskill. This concept is also critical for curriculum construction, especially if the process is automated as in BIP. For a given domain the exact set of these subskills can be extremely difficult to define. Equipped with the tools of the BUGGY model, Burton(1982) suggests that a partition of the theory of bugs be used to define a primitive subskill as "any isolatable part of the skill that it is possible to mislearn"(p. 177). More formally, the set of all observable bugs is partitioned under the equivalence relation of giving wrong answers on the same problems, considering all possible problems. Then a primitive subskill is an equivalence class in this partition; in other words, it is a part of the skill that corresponds to bugs manifesting in exactly the same problems. In practice, one need only consider a finite number of problems.

BIP(for Basic Instructional Program) is presented as a "problem-solving laboratory" for introductory programming classes(Barr et al., 1976). It attempts to individualize the sequence of instruction via the appropriate selection of successive tasks from a pool of 100 sample problems. In contrast with Kimball' s distance metric on probabilistic values, BIP bases its selection on information contained in a network, called the Curriculum Information Network(CIN), that relates tasks in the curriculum to issues in the domain knowledge.
