A non-thermal recovery method which uses gaseous solvents to increase oil recovery.

Vapex (vapor extraction) is a relatively new process for the recovery of heavy oil and bitumen that involves the injection of a vaporized solvent to reduce the viscosity of the oil. The diluted oil is then allowed to drain into a production well under the influence of gravity. It is a potentially economic process that can be applied to reservoirs that are not suitable for thermal recovery method. In addition, the process has the potential to sequester greenhouse gases, and is capable of in situ upgrading of heavy oil.

The VAPEX process uses saturated hydrocarbon solvent vapour(ethane, propane or butane) in conjunction with horizontal wells to mobilize and recover viscous oils and bitumens from hydrocarbon deposits in which the bottom water zone(aquifer) is used to deliver the solvent vapour to the base of the reservoir. The process involves injecting a hydrocarbon solvent into the reservoir along with a displacement gas to mobilize the hydrocarbons in the reservoir and move them toward the production well.

Northstar Energy Corporation développera et testera une nouvelle technologie de récupération connue sous le nom d'extraction à la vapeur, ou VAPEX, qui a le potentiel de bonifier la rentabilité de la production d'huile lourde tout en diminuant drastiquement les émissions de dioxide de carbone (CO2). [...] Ce projet fait fond sur un investissement consenti par PTC en 1998 pour développer le système de drainage par gravité à l'aide de vapeur (SDGV) pour extraire des huiles lourdes. Tout comme le système SDGV, le procédé VAPEX utilisera deux puits horizontaux pour récupérer l'huile lourde. Toutefois, ce nouveau procédé utilise un solvant plutôt que la vapeur, ce qui élimine le besoin de brûler du carburant, (habituellement du gaz naturel) pour créer de la vapeur et réduit ainsi l'émission de gaz. De plus, le solvant utilisé dans le procédé VAPEX peut être réutilisé. Avec le procédé VAPEX, les solvants vaporisés sont injectés dans le réservoir par un puits horizontal. Le solvant dilue le bitume, ce qui en réduit la viscosité et permet à l'huile d'être drainé vers les puits de production par gravité.

Le VAPEX est un procédé équivalent au SAGD («steam-assisted gravity drainage», «drainage par gravité à l'aide de vapeur») dans lequel la vapeur d'eau est remplacée par un hydrocarbure injecté sous forme vapeur, en général du propane ou du naphta (coupe de pétrole proche du nonane). L'intérêt d'injecter cet hydrocarbure est d'éviter l'utilisation d'eau sous forme vapeur qui pose des problèmes environnementaux et nécessite une séparation coûteuse au niveau de la production. L'inconvénient du VAPEX est d'injecter un fluide qui coûte cher, qu'il est donc impératif de récupérer. Des essais pilotes doivent être réalisés pour vérifier que cela est possible. One example of the butane stove is the Bleuet S-200. At above-freezing temperatures it has high heat output per unit weight and offers the advantage of quick starting. Butane has about 7% more energy that gasoline on a weight basis, 14% less on a volume basis. The stove does not have the continuous, even heat output of the gasoline or kerosene stove. When the tank is almost empty, output is about 30% of the initial amount.
