In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Alternatively the hawser may be brought to an after capstan and hove in as the cable is veered. 2, record 1, English, - after%20capstan

An oceanographic mooring consists of a long line or cable with an anchor at one end, a float at the other, and instruments attached to the line in between or to a float at the surface. This is one form of technology which Bell hopes will really bring the "information highway" to you over the telephone system, rather than through their competitors such as cable companies. Setting aside all the techie stuff, ADSL allows very high speed data movement over your regular copper telephone line. It's called "asymmetric" because the speeds going into your house or business are much greater than the speeds sent from you back up the line. 5, record 27, English, - asymmetric%20digital%20subscriber%20line

HDSL(High bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line), one of the earliest forms of DSL, is used for wideband digital transmission within a corporate site and between the telephone company and a customer. HDSL can carry as much on a single wire of twisted-pair cable as can be carried on a T1 line. 3, record 28, English, - high%20bit%20rate%20digital%20subscriber%20line

Free-Space Optics(also known as FSO, Wireless Optics or Optical Wireless) is an optical data, voice and video transmission system. Like fiber optic cable, wireless optics communication systems use laser light to transmit a digital signal between two transceivers. However, unlike fiber, the laser like is transtmited through the air(free-space) instead of through a glass strand. In order for the digital signal to be transmitted and received, there must be clear line of site between each wireless optics unit. In other words, there should be no obstructions such as trees or buildings between the transceiver units. 1, record 32, English, - free%2Dspace%20optics
Record number: 32, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The technology is useful where the physical connection of the transmit and receive locations is difficult, for example in cities where the laying of fibre optic cables is expensive. Free Space Optics is also used to communicate between space-craft, since outside of the atmosphere there is little to distort the signal. The optical links usually use infrared laser light, although low-data-rate communication over short distances is possible using LEDs [Light Emitting Diode]. IrDA [Infrared Data Association] is a very simple form of free-space optical communications. Distances up to the order of 10 km are possible, but the distance and data rate of connection is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions. 7, record 32, English, - free%2Dspace%20optics

Before competition, all these technologies used to operate completely on their own, each supplying the consumer with a distinct service. The phone company brought you phone service, a cable company brought you television, and you got your computer or digital phone from others. Digital technology is changing all this, making it possible for anything--a voice over a phone line, a TV picture and accompanying sound, data from your computer--to be reduced to digital "bits" and send over any kind of access line. This means that some day, the phone will ring and you will answer by talking to your computer screen, which will also be the place you can watch a movie or the news. 1, record 35, English, - convergence

1, record 35, French, - convergence

Hauling with a pulley. Sometimes, the direction of the skidding trail or the narrowness of the track mean that the tractor and its winch cannot be positioned so that the trees are brought out in a straight line directly to the track. In that case, using a pulley makes it possible to bring the logs out indirectly by angling the path of the cable. Depending on the position of the pulley, the logs may be placed parallel or perpendicular to the track, for loading onto the trailer. 1, record 57, English, - hauling%20with%20a%20pulley
