CABLE SHIP [10 records]

Record 1 2024-02-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Water Transport
CONT

In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Alternatively the hawser may be brought to an after capstan and hove in as the cable is veered.

  • Climate Change
CONT

The research team searched for evidence of plumes around the Deepwater Horizon riser pipe using a technique called a "tow-yo, "which oceanographers had perfected to search for plumes from hydrothermal vents of the seafloor. To tow-yo, researchers dangle a package of sensors into the ocean from a cable connected to a ship. The ship tows the cable horizontally while a winch alternately hoists the package up and lowers it down again like a yo-yo—in an effort to land the package within a plume.

CONT

After a repair has been completed by splicing two ends together, the cable vessel has a large section or bight of wire leading form the seabed to the ship. This is stopped off on board by rope stoppers, the procedure is to slip both stoppers and lower the bight of cable back onto the seabed. Although every effort is made to have it fall back flat on the bottom it can sometimes finish with a bight of cable standing proud of the seabed which is easily picked up or fouled by a trawl door.

CONT

Hard rock from the sea floor is difficult to recover. The customary method is to tow a dredge, a heavy iron box or pipe, along the bottom in hope of breaking off fragments(...) One end of the dredge is closed with chain mesh or an iron grill to trap solid fragments while permitting water and soft sediment to wash through; the other is open, attached by a chain bridle to a cable from the ship.
