Differential detectors produce a chart record consisting of a series of peaks; integral detectors produce a record which is a series of steps. Universal detectors respond to all or most compounds; selective detectors respond to a group of compounds or a number of species; specific detectors respond to a very limited class of compounds. In all cases a linear response to concentration is desirable.

To classify detectors, many terms have been introduced; these are based either on (1) the manner in which their output signals are recorded (yielding either integral or differential chromatograms), (2) their modes of operation, (3) monitoring some selective or specific physical property of a compound, or (4) their reactivity with the eluted molecule (destructive or nondestructive).

By comparing the integrator output to the same component in a calibration mixture and in a sample, the concentration in the sample can be calculated. If the detector response has a temporal dimension, as in chromatography, then the instantaneous response is integrated with respect to time.

The SEM subsystem consists of four instruments used for in situ measurements and monitoring of the near-earth(geostationary altitude) space environment and for observing the solar X-ray output. An energetic particles sensor(EPS) and high energy proton and alpha detector(HEPAD) monitor the incident flux density of protons, alpha particles, and electrons over an extensive range of energy levels. Solar output is monitored by an X-ray sensor(XRS) mounted on an X-ray positioning platform, fixed on the solar array yoke. Two redundant three-axis magnetometers, mounted on a deployed 3-meter boom, operate one at a time to monitor Earth's geomagnetic field strength in the vicinity of the spacecraft. The SEM instruments are capable of ground command-selectable, in-flight calibration for monitoring on-orbit performance and ensuring proper operation.

The Space Environment Monitor (SEM) measures in situ the effect of the Sun on the near-earth solar-terrestrial electromagnetic environment, providing real-time data to the Space Environment Services Center (SESC). The SESC, as the nation’s "space weather" service, receives, monitors, and interprets a wide variety of solar-terrestrial data, and issues reports, alerts and forecasts for special events such as solar flares or geomagnetic storms. This information is important to the operation of military and civilian radio wave and satellite communication and navigation systems, as well as electric power networks, and to the mission of geophysical explorers, Shuttle and Space Station astronauts, high-altitude aviators, and scientific researchers.

Depending on the spatial arrangement of the detectors, the relative calibration error may be constant in one spatial direction. For example, a linear array of detectors may cause relative errors across the image, but since the rest of the image is formed by the motion of the sensor platform, the relative error is constant down the columns of the image. This may cause a vertical striping effect. Or, for a line scanning detector array, the striping may be horizontal as was found in early Landsat MSS sensors. Thus, in implementing the calibration error model, the type and arrangement of detectors must be considered.

Un troisième traitement, d'ordre radiométrique, consiste à supprimer ce que les spécialistes appellent parfois «l'effet pyjama». Le système de prise de vues d'un satellite d'observation est, en effet, constitué de milliers de petits détecteurs disposés en rangés parallèles. Comme tout matériel de ce niveau de sensibilité, les détecteurs ne vieillissent pas tous de la même manière. Au bout d'un certain temps de vie, on constate dans les prises de vue des variations de contraste entre les différentes zones du cliché, avec une alternance de bandes plus sombres et plus claires. Il faut retravailler l'image pour obtenir un contraste uniforme ce qui permet de rendre invisibles les limites entre les images et donne l'impression à l'observateur de ne voir qu'une seule et même image alors qu'il est en possession d'une multitude de clichés d'images brutes assemblés.

In 1963, Bevan and Thoburn introduced a new concept in gas chromatographic detectors-a quantitative integral detector. These investigators made a practical gravimetric detector using an automatic-recording vacuum balance. Since the gravimetric detector integrates, a step-to-step pattern is provided instead of the usual chromatographic succession of peaks. The weight increase from each step-to-step increment is the amount of component present in that fraction and the total weight increase is the total sample weight. If absorption is complete, calibration with synthetic mixtures is not necessary.
