Passive microwave radiometers can be grouped into two categories: conical scanning radiometers and cross-track scanning radiometers. A passive microwave radiometer is considered a conical scanning radiometer when the footprint size and earth incidence angle remain unchanged across the scan line, while a cross-track scanning radiometer has varying footprint size and earth incidence angle across the scan line. 4, record 1, English, - conical%2Dscanning%20radiometer

Conical scanning radiometers are characterized by a continuous instrument calibration, with the sensors passing, at every rotation, below two calibration sources : a cold-sky reflector... and an on-board calibration target(OBCT) which provides a hot temperature reference. 5, record 1, English, - conical%2Dscanning%20radiometer

Just as the radiosonde record has deficiencies, however, the satellite data also suffer from, among other things, limited vertical resolution, orbit drift, satellite platform changes, instrument drift, complications with calibration procedures, and the introduction of biases through modifications of processing algorithms. Other upper-air measurements have come from moving platforms such as aircraft. Observations from some high-mountain locations have also been considered part of the upper-air measurement system. 1, record 2, English, - upper%2Dair%20measurement

Instrument calibration is intended to eliminate or reduce bias in an instrument's readings over a range for all continuous values. For this purpose, reference standards with known values for selected points covering the range of interest are measured with the instrument in question. Then a functional relationship is established between the values of the standards and the corresponding measurements. 1, record 11, English, - instrument%20calibration

Calibration of instruments.-Calibration can be called for : with a new instrument; when a specified time period is elapsed; when a specified usage(operating hours) has elapsed; when an instrument has had a shock or vibration which potentially may have put it out of calibration; whenever observations appear questionable. For the SAR mission, the planning is based on a direct and permanent contact with the user in order to schedule image acquisition for the right time and for over the appropriate area of the Earth. This activity is the responsibility of the ERS Central User Service. At the same time, the users of the data collected by the other instruments are also interested in global coverage and are ready to handle all the available production. The mission planning for the other instruments therefore consists of the scheduling of the instruments and the on-board recorder to take full advantage of the recorder's capacity and to protect certain geographic areas used for instrument monitoring against systematic gaps(due to the acquisition of SAR images or to gaps in the data recording), in view of instrument calibration and verification. Thermocouple Psychrometry. A relatively modern technique for measuring water potential uses the flow of current through a small thin thermocouple(TC) to measure the water content of the vapor phase above a sample. Electrical current flows through a TC as a function of temperature, and temperature changes as water evaporates off the TC. The flux of water off the TC is determined by the amount of water in the vapor phase, which in turn, depends upon the water potential of the sample. Today, we will measure the water potential as well as the osmotic potential of some plant samples using the Decagon thermocouple psychrometer and nanovoltmeter. This device has nine sample chambers. We will fill three of the chambers with standard solutions to provide calibration of the TC, three with leaf samples, and three with crushed leaf samples(crushed to eliminate pressure potential P, leaving only osmotic potential as contributing to water potential). We will then let the samples equilibrate for 2 hours. We will need to calibrate the Decagon instrument to correct for the effect of temperature, pressure, and relative humidity on it's performance. 3, record 23, English, - thermocouple%20psychrometer

... the Friehe-Grossman Method... depends upon the accurate calibration and operation of the thermoelectric dewpoint instrument on the aircraft. The method requires that each level leg be independently calibrated. The calibration coefficients are checked for altitude(pressure and/or temperature) dependence. In the case of both IFC-1 and-5 the calibration coefficients were averaged for all legs in the well-mixed layer for a given mission since little altitude dependence was noted for the slope of the calibration curve(which is important to the estimation of the moisture flux). 2, record 28, English, - moisture%20flux
