Record 1 2019-05-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Food Additives
  • Collaboration with the FAO
CONT

In the EU [European Union], a food additive is permitted to be present in a final product made of more than one ingredient(also called a compound foodstuff) even if this food additive is not allowed in this final product, as long as the food additive is permitted in one of the ingredients of the compound food. This is called the carry-over principle. This principle does not apply to : infant formula, follow on formula, processed cereal-based foods, baby foods and dietary foods for special medical purposes intended for infants and young children, except where specially provided for.

  • Property Law (common law)
OBS

Remainders are either legal or equitable. If they are legal, they are subject to the legal remainder rules and to destruction.... They are subject, in addition, to the rule in "Shelley's Case" and the rule against perpetuities.... Legal remainders arise under common law conveyances, including modern grants. Formerly, they also arose under wills, but it is probable that all remainders arising under wills are now equitable.... The legal remainder rules are a carry-over from feudal land law and are based on the importance that the law attached to seisin. While they are long since out of tune with modern conditions, they remain in force in common law Canada.(Anger & Honsberger, 2nd ed., 1985, pp. 391-2).

"Chinese homer" : An expression used widely in the 1950's to describe a cheap home run. The term is a carry-over from the days long past when Chinese labor was vastly underpaid, and it was most commonly used in connection with New York's Polo Grounds(since demolished), where the distances along the foul lines were 257 feet in right field and 279 in left field [instead of the now standard 325 feet].

CONT

Banking. Allowances [the authorization to emit a specific quantity of a particular pollutant] are usually allocated for use in a specific compliance period. The vintage of the allowance identifies the period in which it is eligible to be used. If allowances are unused, they may expire (i.e., be invalidated) or be banked (i.e., carried forward) for compliance use in future periods.

CONT

In the event that a Party has a surplus of units in its national registry at the end of the first commitment period, a portion of these credits may be carried-over to a subsequent commitment period after 2012. This carry-over provision is also referred to as banking of emission units.

PHR

French

Domaine(s)
  • Droit environnemental
  • Agents de pollution
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Combustion and Fuels (Fireplaces)
  • Anti-pollution Measures
  • Air Pollution
DEF

A system design that separates the combustion process over more than one discrete chamber.

CONT

The alternatives for nitrogen oxide control are boiler operation changes, combustion equipment modifications to reduce NOx formation, and flue gas treatment.... In the U.S. and Canada, combustion modification (CM) is the most common method of NOx reduction. NOx can be reduced by injecting the combustion air in two stages, normally by reducing air flow to the burner and injecting the remainder through "overfire" air ports in the side of the boiler. Low-NOx burners that accomplish staged conditions within the burner flame have also been developed. Staged combustion ... reduces emission by 15-25%.

OBS

This approach increases residence time for more complete combustion and lower ash carry-over.

CONT

In Western Canada all wheat seeded area is projected to decline by eight per cent to 11. 5 million hectares(Mha). Spring wheat area is forecast to decrease from 10. 4 Mha in 1996 to 9. 3 Mha in 1997 largely due to lower expected returns and high carry-over stocks from 1996-97. In addition, higher relative returns should cause a small shift from CWRS to CPS varieties. The bulk of the decline in wheat area is expected to shift into oilseed crops. A small increase in summerfallow is also projected, in the dark brown and brown soil zones, despite the prospect of above average spring soil moisture based on current snow cover.
