These anti-personnel rounds fall primarily into what could be considered the "canister" category, and are designed in most cases to turn the grenade launcher into what many would consider a large shotgun.

Prevention of the escape of gas developed by the propellant charge and primer.

Obturation is an important factor in three specific areas and is obtained by : a. The expansion and sealing of the cartridge case to the chamber wall. b. The prevention of leakage between the primer and the primer pocket wall. c. The prevention of gas escape between the projectile and the bore throughout the entire bore travel; this being accomplished by "bullet set-up", or "wad set-up" in the case of a shotgun.

In caseless ammunition weapons, obturation of the chamber is a function of the breech face.
