Parallel slalom is all about carving, so hard boots and plate bindings are used with a rigid board which can cut through the snow and give a stable and faster ride. To cut down on air resistance, riders lean into the turns and wear skin-tight suits. Most wear knee-height shin guards as they often hit the gates as they pass them, and helmets protect the head. 3, record 14, English, - parallel%20slalom

Established in 1994, the Canadian Ice Carvers’ Society(CICS) is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization(formerly known as the Ottawa-Hull Ice Carvers Society). In keeping with its mission, CICS works in partnership with federal agencies and community groups to deliver ice carving demonstrations, educational workshops, and in creating large scale ice art exhibits for various events to promote social recognition, higher artistic expression and technical perfection of ice art. Petroglyphs are images incised in rock, usually by prehistoric, especially Neolithic, peoples. They were an important form of pre-writing symbols, used in communication from approximately 10,000 B.C. to modern times, depending on culture and location. The word comes from the Greek words "petros" meaning "stone" and "glyphein" meaning "to carve" ... The term "petroglyph" should not be confused with "pictograph," which is an image drawn or painted on a rock face. 3, record 17, English, - petroglyph

5, record 17, French, - p%C3%A9troglyphe

Halloween is celebrated on October 31st in Canada. Halloween is a favorite family celebration-a time for traditions such as dressing in costumes, trick-or-treating around the neighbourhood, and carving pumpkins. Children dress up in funny or scary costumes and go "trick or treating, "and neighbours are expected to respond by giving them small treats. Adults may also dress in costume for Halloween parties. Halloween(the evening before All Saints or All Hallows Day) is a secular celebration based on ancient Druid customs dating back to 700 B. C. The Druids, a Celtic religious order in ancient Britain, Ireland and France, believed that the souls of the dead returned to mingle with the living on "hallowed eve, "October 31. Each year on that night, the Druids would make bonfires and offer sacrifices of crops and animals, and individuals would dress in costumes to disguise themselves from these spirits. 1, record 25, English, - Halloween

3, record 25, French, - Halloween

The most common adze type was the elbow adze used in the north and central regions [of the Northwest Pacific Coast]. The "elbow" in elbow adze refers to the crook of the haft and not its action in use.... The length and heft of the haft of an elbow adze determined the size of the blade and therefore the size of the chip.... A shaping elbow adze was used for the initial roughing and hollowing of the work. A finishing of surfacing elbow adze had the haft cut away so that the blade springs on impact, popping out the chip. 2, record 43, English, - elbow%20adze

A young star is apparently blasting high-speed gas jets from its poles, carving a void through the dense molecular cloud that was its birthplace, according to an international team of astronomers.... The timing of stellar birth phases depends a lot on the star's environment. If a star has nearby companion stars, or if it starts forming planets in its disk, these objects can clear away gas that feeds the jets, terminating them more quickly than an isolated star without planets. 2, record 45, English, - young%20star

3, record 48, French, - girouette

In works of art, a created texture may be a major expressive element. The marks of the woodcarver's gouge, the contrast between polished marble and the surrounding rough original material, and the dappling left by the silversmith's hammer are only three examples. Strong side texture lighting is exactly what is required to bring out incised relief carving, while smooth texture lighting is essential for an object of polished obsidian. 1, record 74, English, - smooth%20texture%20lighting
