A real difference in pathogenicity between HIV-1 and HIV-2 could be significant, and it would be important to determine its molecular basis. The two viruses infect the same populations of cells, binding the same CD4 receptor, but there are some differences in their genetic material and therefore in proteins. One of the most obvious is the presence in HIV-1 of the vpu gene, which is absent in HIV-(and in SIV, for that matter). Perhaps the product of this gene, a small 16-kilodalton peptide, enpathogenicity. Similarly, HIV-2 and SIV contain the vpx gene; HIV-1 does not. If this gene's 12-kilodalton product somehow slows the proliferation or spread of the virus or reduces its ability cells, that too could help to explain why HIV-2 and SIV appear to be less regularly pathogenic than HIV-1. 1, record 1, English, - vpx%20gene

2, record 1, French, - g%C3%A8ne%20vpx

Drug manufactured by Peninsula Labs which consists of a chain of 8 amino acids which appears to block the entry of HIV into cells bearing the CD4 receptor, a passageway to which HIV is strongly attracted. In that regard, Peptide T is similar to the drug CD4. Peptide T easily enters the brain and has been associated with improvement of neurological symptoms of HIV infection. The several Phase I trials that have involved Peptide T have shown that the drug is not toxic and that it helps to improve the patient's CD4 count. 1, record 3, English, - peptide%2DT

CD4, symbol for a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of most thymocytes and some lymphocytes, including Helper T cells. Human CD4 is the receptor that serves as a docking site for HIV viruses on certain lymphocyte cells. Binding of the viral glycoprotein gp120 to CD4 is the first step in viral entry, leading to the fusion of viral and cell membranes. 1, record 5, English, - CD4%20receptor

1, record 5, French, - r%C3%A9cepteur%20CD4

1, record 5, Spanish, - receptor%20CD4

Recent studies have shown that the CD4 molecule does indeed have a weak affinity for MHC class II molecules. These observations support the idea that antigen recognition by T cells involves the formation of a complex of T cell antigen receptor and CD4 or CD8 on the T cell which recognizes antigen plus MHC on another cell. 1, record 7, English, - CD4%20molecule
