Gas-fired water heaters have a gas burner located below the tank, a thermostatic switch, a gas valve and a pilot light. The thermostat will open the gas valve when it senses the water temperature at the bottom of the tank has dropped below the present limit. Gas flows to the burner and is ignited by the pilot light, heating the tank from below. In addition, the hot exhaust gases are vented through a hollow core in the center of the tank to help heat the water. The exhaust is then passed into the draft hood and to the vent connector where it is discharged to a chimney flue.

Viewed in its own right and aside from its contribution as the starting torch of other lays, it has few qualifications as a cooking fire if one intends to do more than stew a pot of tea, because its heat is all thrown to the center of the pyramid and offers no spread for the utensils, and its coals all drop to one small spot in the center. It is good for light, however, and is prized in the evening. First the coil of birch-bark, or the chip of fat pine, or the handful of tiny twigs broken into a pyramid, or the fuzz-stick; then a few softwood sticks from the size of a pencil up to that of your little finger, stacked around it in wigwam fashion, and lastly the hardwood sticks of finger and thumb size. Remember to keep it tall and slender. And keep it small--a foot high and a foot wide at the base.

The gating system is very similar to that of a three-plate mold except that the runners are very thick, at least 1 3/4in.(45mm) in diameter. There is no runner plate, and the backup plate and A plate are held together by latches. After the material is injected, the outside of the runner freezes but insulates the center, permitting the core to remain fluid at molding temperatures and act as a hot runner.

Graded-index multimode fiber contains a core in which the refractive index diminishes gradually from the center axis out toward the cladding. The higher refractive index at the center makes the light rays moving down the axis advance more slowly than those near the cladding. Also, rather than zig-zagging off the cladding, light in the core curves helically because of the graded index, reducing its travel distance. The shortened path and the higher speed allow light at the periphery to arrive at a receiver at about the same time as the slow but straight rays in the core axis. The result : a digital pulse suffers less dispersion. These fibers often become the physical medium for local-area networks.
