CENTER DRILL [15 records]

Record 1 2021-07-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
CONT

Horizontal hydraulic fracturing is accomplished by drilling vertically to the depth of the shale formation, which is generally found between 0. 6 – 1. 5 km below the surface. When the gas-containing shale is intercepted, the drill bit is maneuvered to travel horizontally through the center of the formation for a distance of up to 1. 6km. Water, biocides, surfactants, sands, and other chemicals are forced into the borehole under extremely high pressure to induce fractures in the shale that allow gas to rise to the surface for collection...

OBS

The terms "fraccing" and "fracing," short for "fracturing," are pronounced "fracking."

Key term(s)
  • horizontal hydro fracking
  • horizontal hydro-fracking

French

Domaine(s)
  • Forage des puits de pétrole
DEF

CONT

... the Alcoa Seaprobe... an all-aluminium, diesel-electric-powered ship,... is 243 feet long, with a beam of 50 feet and a draft or about 13 feet. The Seaprobe is propelled by vertical axis cycloidal propellers fore and aft so she can hold a fixed position on deep water.... At the center of the Seaprobe is a derrick 125 feet high, like those on oil-drilling ships; beneath the derrick is a center well through which drill pipe is lowered.

Subject field(s)
  • Surgical Instruments
DEF

A surgical tool used to cut out circular pieces of bone or other tissue.

OBS

According to some sources, trepan and trephine are synonyms. But according to others, there is a difference between the trepan(drill) and the trephine, the trephine being an improvement on the trepan and consisting of a circular or cylindrical saw, with a handle like that of a gimlet, and a little sharp perforator called the center pin.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments chirurgicaux
DEF

  • Equipment (Oil and Natural Gas Extraction)
DEF

A walled, round hole or well in the hull of a drill ship(usually in the center) through which the drilling and other assemblies pass while a well is being drilled, completed, or abandoned from the drill ship.

CONT

Unlike traditional vessels, [drill vessels] are modified by a center opening through the vessel for conducting drilling operations. This center opening is commonly called a "moonpool. "

CONT

Most of the development of equipment and technology for rotary drilling from floating vessels started with an extensive shallow-hole coring operation off the coast of California in the Santa Barbara Channel. The very first operations were conducted "over the side" of the drill vessel, but these were quickly supplanted by vessels designed with a center drill well or "moonpool. "

CONT

The center drill well is located with the center of gravity of the vessel to minimize the effect of rotational motion. The derrick or mast is located over the drill well with the pipe racks adjacent either fore or aft.

Key term(s)
  • moon-pool

French

Domaine(s)
  • Forage des puits de pétrole
  • Outillage (Extraction du pétrole et du gaz)
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Drilling (Machine-Tooling)
DEF

A drilling machine in which a vertical drill moves into the work, which is stationary.

CONT

A drill press is preferable to a hand drill when the location and orientation of the hole must be controlled accurately. A drill press is composed of a base that supports a column, the column in turn supports a table. Work can be supported on the table with a vise or hold down clamps, or the table can be swiveled out of the way to allow tall work to be supported directly on the base. Height of the table can be adjusted with a table lift crank than locked in place with a table lock. The column also supports a head containing a motro. The motor turns the spindle at a speed controlled by a variable speed control dial. The spindle holds a drill chuck to hold the cutting tools(drill bits, center drills, deburring tools, etc.). A new drill hole pattern in which two overlapping holes of about 2 1/4 inches in diameter are drilled in the tunnel center and left uncharged. These holes form a slot roughly 4 by 2 inches to which the easers can break. All the holes in the round are parallel and in-line with the tunnel. Short-delay detonators are used for the easer holes and 1/2-second delays for the rest of the round. A pull of 10 feet per round has been obtained in strong rock with 10-foot 6-inch holes. Explosive consumption for the easer holes is about 0. 2 pounds per foot of hole.

Domaine(s)
  • Travail aux explosifs (Exploitation minière)
DEF
