CONT

The U. S. Interagency Fire Center defines a megafire by its size : it is a wildfire that burns more than 40, 500 hectares(100, 000 acres) of land. Other wildfire experts expand the definition of a megafire beyond "acres burned" to mean wildfires that have an unusually large impact on people and the environment.

OBS

"Megafire" is an emerging concept commonly used to describe fires that are extreme in terms of size, behaviour, and/or impacts, but the term’s meaning remains ambiguous.

CONT

  • Flight Simulators (Aeroindustry)
CONT

The Dynamic Flight Simulator, or the DFS, is a manned full system simulation facility which reproduces the total G-force environment common to modern high performance aircraft.

CONT

This combination of High-Tech, Low-Tech and Old-Tech is the heart of the Dynamic Flight Simulator at the Naval Warfare Center in Warminster, PA, where the Navy simulates and tests, people and equipment, both of which must function under(often) extreme conditions.... travelling at supersonic speed, or engaging hostile enemy fire, or having to eject from a stricken aircraft and endure the 15 plus G thrust of an ejection seat. When the Navy puts that word "Dynamic" in front of the flight simulator, they really mean it. At the speed levels modern jet fighters attain there aren’t many second chances.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Simulateurs de vol (Constructions aéronautiques)
CONT

The driving phase begins when the lead foot lands on the outside of the forefoot just in front of the athlete's center of gravity(i. e., the athlete's hips). The foot is driven to the ground by the hip extensor muscles. It is important for the quadriceps to fire as the foot makes contact with the ground to keep the knee from flexing excessively, which would dissipate elastic energy. The ankle should be dorsiflexed, with the foot's big toe pulled up, the combination of which will allow for the storage of elastic energy to be maximized to help with propulsion later...

An arrangement of wood that is standing end on and is built like a pyramid or cone. The centre is fired, and as the core burns away the outside logs fall inwards, constantly feeding the heart of the fire. This type of fire gives good radiation and even with wet wood burns well.

CONT

Every novice knows the wigwam fire--indeed if a child who has never made a fire were told to build one, he would surely turn up with a wigwam, for it is the natural arrangement. But nevertheless, it is not without importance in the craft, for it is the core of every fire lay no matter how elaborate. Viewed in its own right and aside from its contribution as the starting torch of other lays, it has few qualifications as a cooking fire if one intends to do more than stew a pot of tea, because its heat is all thrown to the center of the pyramid and offers no spread for the utensils, and its coals all drop to one small spot in the center. It is good for light, however, and is prized in the evening. First the coil of birch-bark, or the chip of fat pine, or the handful of tiny twigs broken into a pyramid, or the fuzz-stick; then a few softwood sticks from the size of a pencil up to that of your little finger, stacked around it in wigwam fashion, and lastly the hardwood sticks of finger and thumb size. Remember to keep it tall and slender. And keep it small--a foot high and a foot wide at the base.

CONT

DEF

A weather station at which the services of an observer are not required.

CONT

Remote Automatic Weather Stations measure a number of atmospheric elements including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and precipitation. The information for these elements are recorded hourly and collected at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise. The Western Regional Climate Center receives these data near real-time and continuously updates a historical archive. RAWS sites are primarily owned and maintained by both federal and state land management agencies. Approximately 800 sites are now operational mostly in the western U. S.

OBS

RAWS unit measures selected weather elements automatically and is equipped with telemetry apparatus for transmitting the electronically recorded data via radio, satellite or by a landline communication system at predetermined times on a user-requested basis.
