CONT

The matchlock constituted the first mechanical device for firing.(...) For this improvement(...) two modifications of the hand cannon were necessary : the addition of a pan to hold the priming powder, which replaced the match in setting off the powder charge inside the barrel, and the addition of the serpentine, holding the match and thus freeing the hand of the shooter or his aide. These original matchlocks did not as yet include the leverage system worked by a trigger and indeed did, not have true "locks". Instead, the serpentine was a simple S-shaped arm pivoted in its center, the lower end serving as a handle by which the shooter moved the device manually.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Armes légères
CONT

R bar approach of the space shuttle towards the satellite ... along the radius vector.

OBS

For visualization purposes, the station's direction of motion is called the velocity vector, or V-bar for short. By convention, points in front of the station are said to be on the positive V-bar while points behind are considered negative. The imaginary line connecting the station with the center of the Earth is called the radius vector, or R-bar. Points directly below the station along this line are considered positive while points above are considered negative. Endeavour, then, will approach the station along the plus R-bar. The station will be oriented with its long axis aligned with the velocity vector, with the Unity module in "front" and Zvezda behind. Unity's nadir and zenith ports will be oriented as their names imply. This orientation, or attitude, is known as "XVV, "i. e., the station's X axis is aligned with the velocity vector. The terminal rendezvous sequence will begin with a rocket firing(TI) as Endeavour trails the station by about eight nautical miles. Once the shuttle reaches the plus R-bar, commander Brent Jett will guide the ship up from directly below. As he nears the station, he will yaw the shuttle 180 degrees so its tail is pointing in the direction of motion and its nose toward the minus V-bar. Assuming a good linkup, the shuttle will begin controlling the station's orientation for the duration of Endeavour's mission, moving the lab back into an "X-POP" attitude with the station's X axis perpendicular to the plane of its orbit. In this orientation, the long axis of the station is broadside to the velocity vector.

CONT

The flight plan calls for Wetherbee to approach Mir from directly below, along the imaginary line joining the station and the center of the Earth. This is known as the R-bar, or radius vector, and shuttles approaching from below are said to be carrying out a "plus R-bar rendezvous"(it would be a negative R-bar approach if Atlantis came in from above Mir). By approaching from below, the shuttle can utilize the natural braking provided by Earth's gravity to minimize the use of upward firing thrusters that could damage Mir's fragile solar arrays.

negative R-bar approach: term officially approved by the International Space Station official approval Group (ISSOAG).

The hand firing lever and rod is the simple mechanical hand method for firing the weapon when the electric solenoid is not working, typically used only as a backup firing mechanism. If you look closely, you will see that the firing rod is attached to the center pin of the electric firing solenoid, so using either one will actuate the firing lever and set off the percussion cap inside the shell when the gun is loaded and fired.

A power burner in which a fan, or blower, blows air at high velocity past turbulators. The gas, at regulated pressure, is released into the turbulent airstream-typically from a ring at the mouth of the burner(in which case it is also called a ring burner). The gas escapes through orifices around the periphery of the ring. Gas and air are adjusted simultaneously to maintain the proper air-fuel ratio as the firing rate changes. In high-pressure gun burners, the gas is ejected at pressures up to 15 psi from spuds located in the center of the turbulent airstream instead of at the outside.

The temperature at any given point within the kiln remains constant and is monitored by sensing equipment in the form of thermocouples which feed data into a computer. The tiles enter at one end, are gradually heated(Pre-heat zone) as they progress slowly towards the center(Firing zone) of the kiln, and then are cooled slowly as they approach the(Cooling zone) opposite end of the tunnel. This process is widely used in the ceramic floor and wall tile industry.

In the hollow cone, as the name implies, the greatest concentration of droplets is at the outer edge of the spray, with little or no droplet distribution in the center.
