DEF

In general, any player whose assigned position is the left or right instead of the center. But more specifically, refers to players whose job is to come into the attack by bringing the ball up the side line(i. e., the wings) and to send good crossing passes into the center.

CONT

Pure "wingers" aren’t used today as much as they used to be. "Wingers" used to be the wide forwards or midfielders (who were sometimes called "withdrawn wingers"). Wing midfielders are sometimes called "winghalfs" or "wingmids" & wing fullbacks are "wingbacks." Today, it is more common to use wingmids or wingbacks to come up to cross the ball than to have wing forwards. "Wingers" who bring the ball up the side are often very fast and excellent dribblers.

CONT

Williams is a speedy flank player who will provide service for the forwards.

OBS

winger; wing: There should be a distinction between "wing," the position, and "winger," the player, but most sources consider these terms synonyms to mean the player.

French

Domaine(s)

DEF

The most important floor markings are in front of each basket. Parallel to the backboard, and 15 feet from it, is the free throw line, also called the foul line, from which a player makes his free throws after he has been fouled. DEF

The area where teams line up to shoot foul shots, formerly shaped like a key.

CONT

At each end of the court a free-throw lane is marked. It is a rectangle 12 ft wide and extending 19 ft from the end-line. A semi-circle with a radius of 6 ft is drawn from the center of the free-throw lane giving the lane some resemblance to a keyhole. Hence it is normally referred to as the "key". No player is allowed to remain in the key for more than 3 sec. when his team has the possession of the ball.

CONT

From the ends of the foul line to the base line run two lines that form the free throw lane, or foul lane. ... In international play the foul lane is 17 feet wide at the base line, and therefore its lines slant outward from the 12-foot-wide free throw lane.

Change of position(rotation). Rotation must be clockwise. In the back row, the player in the right-hand corner moves to the center and the player in the center moves to the left-hand corner. This means that the player on the right in front moves to the right-hand corner in the back and serves. In this way, each player occupies each of the six positions in succession.

OBS

The six players in a team line up with three at the front of the court and three at the back for each service. When a team regains service, they must rotate positions. Each player moves one position clockwise. Once the ball is in play, the players may move about the court as they like.
