The Besselian elements are a series of time-dependent variables used to calculate various aspects of a solar eclipse. They describe the movement of the Moon's shadow with respect to the fundamental plane. This plane passes through the center of Earth and is oriented perpendicular to the Moon's shadow axis. Next, the shadow cone is projected onto Earth's surface including the effects of Earth's rotation, the flattening of Earth and the latitude, longitude and elevation of the observer. The local circumstances at the observer's position can then be calculated including the eclipse contact times, eclipse magnitude and the duration of totality(or annularity).

The aircraft classification number is calculated with respect to the center of gravity(CG) position which yields the critical loading on the critical gear. Normally the aftmost CG position appropriate to the maximum gross apron(ramp) mass is used to calculate the ACN. In exceptional cases the forwardmost CG position may result in the nose gear loading being more critical.

ACNs are expressed on a scale from approximately 5 (least demanding aircraft) to 110 (most demanding aircraft). ACNs are applicable only to aircraft having an apron (ramp) mass equal to or greater than 12 600 lb. ACNs have been assigned to present-day aircraft at their maximum and minimum operating masses/weights and at a specific tire pressure. The ACN should not exceed the pavement classification number (PCN) for unrestricted aircraft operations. The ICAO ACN system is the internationally approved and accepted method for ranking aircraft in terms of their pavement-strength requirements.

The anti-clutter sea control is often referred to as STC(Sensitivity Time Control) which decreases the amplification of the receiver immediately after a radar pulse is transmitted, and progressively increases the sensitivity as the range increases. A common mistake is to over adjust the A/C SEA control so that the surface clutter is completely removed. By rotating the control fully clockwise, you see how dangerous this can be; a dark zone is created near the center of the screen and close-in targets can be lost. This dark zone is even more dangerous if the gain has not been properly adjusted. Always leave a little surface clutter visible on the screen. If no surface clutter is observed(on very calm water), set the control at the fully counterclockwise position.

The pilot's eye position locator is a two-way sighting device mounted below the compass on the windshield center post. It is used to locate the pilot's eyes in the design eye position for optimum runway visibility and an unobstructed view of the instrument panels. The design eye position is attained in two stages. The captain or first officer centers himself in his seat in a comfortably slumped position. He rotates his head to face the locator and uses both eyes for sighting.
